100% packet loss

I am having trouble with my internet. I use firefox usually, but when I need to I use safari. The problem is that my internet is going too slow, and my ISP told me to "ping" a website and when I did it told me I had 100% packet loss. My ISP refered me to apple but I dont have the money to pay to get it fixed by them. Does anyone know how I can speed up my net, and if this packet loss thing is a problem, can someone please help me fix it. thanks

first, we nede more information. are you on dialup, dsl, or broadband? Airport or hardwired?
Do you have a router, or are you direct connect?
Is the router configured correctly?

If you have a router, DSL modem, and/or cable modem, pull thier power plugs, wait 30 seconds or so. Shut down your Mac. Power them back on in this order:

Cable/DSL modem.
Wait for it to initialize and come to a ready state.
Power on the Router. Wait for it to come back to a ready state.
Power on the Mac.

Once logged in, and in this order:
ping 127.0.0.1
ping your own IP address
ping your router (if you have one)
ping your ISPs gateway address
ping your ISPs DNS servers

you should pretty much try everything AJ suggested.

as for the packet loss and the info your ISP gave you, I'd fire them. a lot of ISP's dwant to put the blame for internet issues on your Macs but they don't have a hill of beans worth of clue about how to use a Mac or how they work.

I'd be more inclined that your internet problem is a issue with the router, modem, cables, something there... so as long as you're paying your ISP money they have a responsibility to send techs out to your home or office to check and diagnose the hardware you are using if you are using a Broadband connection. etc.
