I 'solved' a problem with a MacBook Pro (Fall 2010) and 30" Cinema display going black / blank and want to share it with the community.
The problem is that the screen seems to become dead, usually after reconnecting the MacBook. Sometimes the monitor comes back to life after waiting minutes to an hour but when it doesn't I've replaced the mini displayport to dual link dvi adapter which (seemed to) solve the problem.
When this happened again I found that NOT connecting the the 30" Cinema Display cable USB to the dual adapter makes it all work. (But you must connect the USB from the display port adapter to the MacBook. I've also never connected the FireWire cable - there's nothing plugged into the monitor.)
