Coolness. Now to power on these old bad boys and see if they'll work, we shall see...

Dec 8, 2014 10:43 AM in response to alazarevichby alazarevich,Now I can't get the Xserves to boot to a 10.7 USB stick. It's not locked. (hex screw thing) I've reset the SCM. I've got an older/compatible apple keyboard and holding down the option button. I've also tried booting to a 10.5 server install DVD (came with the unit) but it just won't boot to anything but the RAID drives OS.
I'm ditching these ancient pieces of fish sticks once and for all, unless someone comes up with a genius idea.

Jan 6, 2015 2:37 PM in response to alazarevichby khalil_amar,Please keep the xserve and try what I did with mine.
The xserve both came with 10.4 server and 10.5 server and they could run 10.6 with no problem as a headless server.
a) I installed 10.7 on a Machine ... iMac or MacBook ( 2006-2008 generation ) that can support 10.7
The iMac or macbook had the hard drive partitioned in two. One with the OS and one with the 10.7 that will go to xserve.
( I like complicated and clean stuff )
Then I went and enabled ssh (remote connection) and remote desktop under sharing. Once on the other machine, I can remotely control the xserve instead of sticking the monitor and see the xserve freeze because of an unsupported graphic card. I don't want to risk that, since I went thru tons of forums.
b) I decided to leave the hard drives ( raid 0 ) in working condition and use spare ones in the xserve bays.
I replaced the original hard drives and put new ones. I booted the xserve in target mode, and used a firewire cable to connect to the imac/macbook.
bay 1, partition in guid mode. bay 2 and bay 3 the same.
I then cloned using carbon copy clone, the second partition from imac/macbook that holds the clean install of 10.7.5 with ssh and remote desktop enabled.
and once the clone has been completed. I shutdown the imac/macbook. then turned off the xserve.
if you don't want to use carbon copy cloner, you can use disk utility and use the Restore pane.
I removed bay 2 and bay 3 to make sure it will start from bay 1, where the cloned 10.7 install is...
The xserve booted in 10.7 and could see it on the network, took control and voila.
I upgraded to 10.7.5
But I confirm, 10.7.5 is the last OS you can put on xserve 1,1 and 2,1

May 28, 2015 6:59 PM in response to alazarevichby David 14,Do you still have those Xserves? If you want them out of your place bad enough you could ship them to me. I can put them to good use. Let me know.
