It is a general input/output error. Are you sure your version of iTunes supports your iOS? See this tip:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ITunes_version_history

I ask since you are posting to the Mac OS X 10.3.x and earlier forum, whose iTunes support itself is quite limited.
