Why do I get duplicate messages on my screen, almost simultaneously, when I send a text message?
iPhone 5s, iOS 8.1.1
if this is you who happens to be sending these duplicate messages, see if it appears on the recipients phone, or vice versa, if it isnt on the other phone, its probably an ios glitch, i reccomend restarting it
Does this happen with all messages? Are they text messages (green bubble) or iMessages (blue bubble)?

The problem occurs with both green and blue bubbles. As soon as I hit send the first bubble comes up on the right side of the screen with a "read" time under the bubble at the moment I sent it. Then in a second or two, the same message/text comes up to the left side of the screen in a gray bubble.
It shows up on the receiving iPhone just as it appears on my phone, duplicate bubbles. The original on the right side with the duplicate in a gray bubble on the left side several seconds later.
This is happening between my phone and my wifes'. How do we make it stop stop?

Are you both using the same Apple ID? If so, it shares everything in Messages, so in addition to receiving your message, she will also see your sent copy.
Yes we are, and have been for several years but this is relatively new behavior. What can we do to fix this?
As a separate but probably related issue, we can send test messages to each other in the house (we have wifi), but out in the world neither of us can send or receive to each other but we can to other friends. Behavior applies to both email and text messages. again, new behavior over the past several weeks.
Would upgrading to Yosemite on our house iMac have an effect on anything? Problems seemed to start after I upgraded several months ago.
