Snow Leopard install disc fails on 4,1 Mac Pro

Hi all,

I'm running a 4,1 vintage Mac Pro - Mid 2009 version.

Generally I run almost the latest OS - 10.9.5 - but I want to create one boot drive for Snow Leopard so I can run Final Cut Pro 7 with the greatest stability.

Strangely, I can't manage to install Snow Leopard.

What happens is, when I insert the Snow Leopard install DVD with the Mac running, I see something curious: The icon for "Install OS X" has a circle with slash through it. Suggesting it won't run, or it's not allowed.

When I boot from the startup DVD by holding down the "C" key and power button, I get as far as the grey screen with the Apple Logo, but then the machine goes into Kernel panic.

I wondered if my old Snow Leopard install DVD had been damaged, so I bought a new one from Apple and tried that one - with exactly the same results.

Of course, once upon a time I was running Snow Leopard on this very same Mac Pro.

I'm wondering if one of my hardware upgrades could be the culprit here. I have: swapped the stock graphics card for an Nvidia GeForce 680 (Mac version), added a bunch of RAM, and put an SSD drive in one of the bays. The older add-ons I had run with Snow Leopard for years - I have a PCI card to enable me to connect eSATA drives, and an AJA Kona LHi card.

I look forward to everyone's ideas.

Mac Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.5), 48 GB RAM, AJA Kona LHi,GeForce 680

This

User Tip: Mac Pro silver tower (2006-2012) Replacement Graphics cards

says:

3) "Mac Edition" cards that require 10.6.8 or later:

• EVGA GTX 285 Mac Edition, about US$450** Vendor recommends Mac Pro 3,1 or later (discontinued)

"Mac Edition Cards -- REQUIRE 10.8.3 or later:

• SAPPHIRE HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 MAC Edition, about US$480** Vendor recommends Mac Pro 4,1 or later

• EVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition, about US$600

But you only have 10.6.3

Many versions of Mac OS X will not install over a previous more-advanced version. It is no surprise at all that from a running 10.9, you cannot invoke the 10.6 Installer on the DVD. That is expected behavior.

To accomplish what you say you want, you will need to boot directly from the 10.6 DVD. Your current graphics card may or may not work in that case.

If you get a kernel panic at that point, the contents of that kernel panic report may give you additional insight. Those reports are saved and can be retrieved from the logs using this article:

The poster he could not even boot from the SL install DVD. The poster said

Might want to always begin threads with a hardware profile, yes?

the 4,1 shipped with 10.5.7 and GT120, the GTX 285 was offered and could boot but poorly.

Many people went with the Apple ATI 5770 later when available.

Did you do that? do you have the original GPU?

you would not want to run SL as a guest OS inside Mavericks, but, it can be done - no fun though.

Also there were problems with the 4,1 and 10.6.0-10.6.2 (may be one of the reasons a 10.6.3 retail DVD was made possible)

Sorry not to be more clear about the Graphics card (if that is the issue.) I've copied the Kernel Panic report below. Happy for any insights it might lead to.

I love that idea - I tried Safe Boot. I install the Snow Leopard Installation DVD, the "Install Mac OS X" icon still has a circle with a slash over it.

If I try to launch it, the error message reads: "You can't use this version of the application 'Install Mac OS X' with this version of OS X. You have to "install Mac OS X" 23.1.1

This is the same error I'd get before.
