my iPod 2nd gen won't update higher than iOS 2.1.1

I keep trying to update my iPod touch 2nd gen to the highest software available for it but it won't update higher than iOS 2.1.1 and i know it can go higher than that to like a 4. something

iPod touch, iOS 2.x, just want an update

To update

The Settings>General>Software Update comes with iOS 5 and later.

Connect the iPod to your computer and update via iTunes as far as your iPod model allows

A 1G iPod can go to iOS 2.2 via iTunes and iOS 3.1.3 via
