There is no single photo app under ios8 that can match iphoto for ios7

I've used iPhoto on my iPad and iPhone since it was first available. All my photo editing was done with that one app. I've since upgraded (unfortunately) to iOS8 and tried every standalone photo app looking for the same capabilities I had in iPhoto for iOS7. NO APP HAS THE EFFECTS AND BRUSHES OF IPHOTO. Not Lightroom, Snapseed, Pixelmator, Camera+, Photogene, ... Nothing!!

When Aperture (I use it on my iMac) is gutted like iPhoto for iOS7 and all Apple photo apps becomes Photos, I hope the best of both is incorporated into the Photos app. If not, one of the core strengths of Apple, I.e., graphics and image handling will be lost.

Photos for the Mac is still under development. So be sure to send feedback to the developer team, to make sure they are aware of the features expected from a photo app. Use this feedback form: Apple - iPhoto - Feedback

You are right, the brushed adjustments and repair tools are an essential. Other missing features are:

Smart albums based on tags (keywords) and other meta data
The ability to assign metadata - keywords, captions
To search for metadata - EXIF, IPTC
The ability to sort photos and albums
Info panels to see EXIF and IPTC

What makes you think anything will be removed ("gutted") from Aperture?

And even if it is, then simply don't "update" to that version...

I'm reacting to the news regarding the ultimate fate of Aperture…termination of support. I'm kinda a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" guy. As my sons tell me…"don't worry Dad, Apple will make it right. I'm still lamenting the demise of ClarisWorks . I've used Apple products since the Apple II and Lisa. Just semi-set in my ways.

MacOS X 10.10 is fundamentally different from the previous versions of MacOS X with respect to the basic frameworks for the development of applications for graphics, image processing, or games. There are completely new frameworks - Sprite Kit, Scene Kit, Cloud Kit, a redesigned Image Kit, and the ability to provide app extensions.

Aperture and iPhoto would have to be completely rewritten to profit from the new MacOS X frameworks. Apple decided to create a new application for the Mac. With the new MacOS X 10.0 app extensions it will be easy for third party developers to supplement the new Photos.app with extensions and add missing features. Even Apple's first version of Photos will be too basic, it will hopefully soon be supplemented by many useful extensions.
