Q: Created sideshow in iPhoto shared with iTunes and now it will not finish when I try to burn it.

Using Yosemite 10.10.1

Created a slideshow in iPhoto shared with iTunes then created a DVD in iDVD and it plays in Quicktime in my MacBook Pro.

What I'm trying to do is create a DVD that will play in a DVD Player on a TV Screen.

When I try to burn to a DVD it is slow and then freezes in the final phase of burning. However, when I check the DVD nothing has burned. The disc is empty.

Any ideas?

MacBook Pro (15-inch 2.4/2.2 GHz), OS X Yosemite (10.10.1), Intel Dual Core

Here's how to create a video DVD from a slideshow in iPhoto:

Export the slideshow out of iPhoto as a QT movie file via the Export button in the lower toolbar.  For iPhoto 9.5 and later select 480p.

Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.

Follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:

Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.

To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.

Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.

Why iLife 09 instead of 11?

If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.

Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:

This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:

    Pacifist001.jpg

You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.

Thanks Toad …. Need a few days before I'll know if your recommendation works.

I do see three or four things that I can do differently compared my original and I hope it works.

    Hey Toad,

I see two versions of iLife 09. One is OLD VERSION the other is simply 09. I assume I need simply 09?

    Please confirm.

If I would buy something like Roxio Toast will all of the music and text added to the photos in iPhoto carry though without issue?

And would I be better off using a third party software rather than mess with Apple because it seems they are not interested in DVD creation.

I will respect your thoughts on Third Party and Apple software.

    Please advise.     Roger10

There's only one iLife 09 so both of those items would be OK.  Like this one from Amazon.com.

Roxio Toast can create a video DVD.  You'll need to export the iPhoto slideshow as I described above and add it to Toast when you create the Toast project.

If you want more user interactive menus and a greater selection of themes and be able to modify the themes a bit to your liking then there's no equal to iDVD.  Just remember that iDVD 7 still works with Yosemite but we don't know how much longer it will, i.e. when OS X 10.11 comes out.

    I'm back.

Have have loaded iLife 09 and have begun to create a DVD.

The third paragraph I have stubbed my toe. I loaded the QT file in the box to the left of the Theme box. They displayed horizontal from left to right. At that point I get and error message that follows and the save as Disk Image is not available. Grayed out.

Error Message "There were warnings during Project Validation. It is reccommended that you fix these problems before buying the project.

I'm stuck again. Would you please recommend a solution?

    What are "they"?

"There were warnings during Project Validation. It is reccommended that you fix these problems before buying the project.

Did you move the QT file from it's location after adding it to the iDVD project?  It can't be moved once added to the project.

Did you use any audio tracks in the QT slideshow that were purchased from iTunes and might be DRM protected?

In the Project Info section how long are your menus?  There's a 15 minute limit to any playing time for the menus, i.e. any audio added to the menu or videos added to a drop zone.

Made sure all buttons or text links are within the TV safe area.  Make sure there are no empty menu animated photo bins or drop zones.

Horizontal layout of the theme box and drop box where I dropped the movie slideshow. I did not move or touch the movie from the drop box in the drop zone. And I did not complete a theme. I would rather not have a theme. I assume the drop zone is where the DVD comes together?

Used three songs from a CD I purchased and own. They were loaded and brought into the movie through iTunes. Every slide movie has text added into from iPhoto event. The slides play 5 seconds and the entire movie uses the Ken Burns effect. I don't know what DRM is? The entire movie is about 8 minutes and approximately 135 MB. The DVD's I currently have a Memorex DVD+R. I am prepared to buy your suggestions of DVD's.

The only things I see in the drop zone is the box for the Theme and another  box where I dropped the movie slideshow.

    Thanks once again

You have to have a them.  That's how iDVD works.  However, if you use an older simple theme with no animated menus you can replace the background image with a blank, black image or one of your choosing.

A drop zone is for having a photo or a movie play or display while the menu is viewing.  However, to play a full movie it must be added to the menu outside of any drop zones.

Or you can use the method described in this tutorial:  No Theme iDVD.

What theme are you using?  Try one without a drop zone and either change the background image as I mentioned or try  Karsten's method.
