Q: Clam Shell Refurbished as gift?

Thoughts?

 

My husband has a clamshell that he'd love to be able to use, if only for basic tasks. What can I upgrade and make it work for a Christmas surprise?

    Where are you located? You'll probably need to find someone who can work on legacy Macs to get this going again.

    I'm in Portland, Oregon.  It powers on and all that jazz, but is basically useless.  My phone has more memory/storage than it does.  Think I could make it run via an external drive?  I just know how much he loves it, though it's been living in a box in the garage for 10 years.

    I totally understand. I picked up donated computers for inner city schools when I was in Chicago. I picked up this old iMac G3 Bondi from this guy and he asked to have a few moments with it before I left. So he sat for 10 minutes with his arm around it while I waited.

    But no OS? I actually have a running SE and a IIFx both of which still run. My problem would be that I left all my old operating systems in Chicago. Wait I have PPC OS's back to 10.2 - 10.3. The last of those Clamshells would run Tiger. 10.6.X.

    I have never actually seen it on, I assume it's running whatever OS it had at that time.  I'll sneak it to work today and turn it on to see.  Tiger...  oh those days again...  the cat families are missed, I always got a laugh when there was a new one.  Guess it's National Parks now!

    I feel the same way. They didn't actually use everything possible. How about Lynx, Bobcat, Ocelot?

    The original Clamshell iBooks that were  launched back in 1999 and 2000 came with MacOS 8.5 or OS 9.

    You can still get a new battery which gives you a 6 hour battery life, you can use it as a Typewirter with the included AppleWorks office suite which can read and wríte the old MS Ofiice .doc files. There is a web browser named Classilla which can be used for surfing the internet (no flash, please)

    You may install an old iTunes Version for OS9 and use it as a stylish music box - hook it up via audio cable to your home stereo system.

     

    Your iBook can be maxxed out with a new HD up to 128GB  (the old one are a little bit noisy after 10 years) and a 512MB RAM Stick can be added to the standard 32MB or 64MB onboard ram. Feel free to to a look on my website in german and english for further options.
