How do I disable Auto Save?

As I compose an email Auto Save keeps frequent copies. They end up in Trash and make it difficult if I need to find something in Trash. How do I stop Auto Save?

iMac (21.5-inch, Late 2012), OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

Can you confirm please if this is an issue with Mail saving multiple drafts on a OS X 10.5 server? or just a random problem with mail itself?

This is a constant issue so I end up with hundreds of versions of saved email drafts. As I am typing an email it saves several times during the course of composing the email.
