I don't know why anyone thought this format was a good idea. A .wmz file is actually considered a possible threat since the since file could could contain a Java applet, which can do to the viewer's computer whatever the author wrote it to do.

I've scoured the web more than once looking for a sample .wmz file just to see how to get one to play back on a Mac. They don't seem to exist. You can easily find .wmv sample videos, but not .wmz.

Email the person back and tell them to send you the video in its original .wmv format. If they refuse, tell them where they can stick their .wmz file.

A .wmz file is a normal Windows .wmf video which has been ZIP compressed and contains JavaScript code in order to change the appearance of the Windows Media Player. In other words, a lot of extra junk instead of just sending out the .wmf file as is.

Try the free VLC Player. It can play black just about any video format.
