Q: Yosemite and Canon MX310 scanner are incompatible

I recently installed Yosemite OS on my Mini Mac (2011). Till then my Canon MX310 scanned and printed fine. Now it does not scan any longer and I get this message:

Cannot communicate with scanner for these reasons:

- Scanner is turned off.

- USB cable is disconnected.

It prints fine, no problems.

I looked for a possible solution and found that the Canon site does not list version 10.10 for the MX310. Can I thus assume that my printer/scanner is now obsolete and not compatible with my computer. If this is the case I am seriously peeved that I downloaded Yosemite. This is not my only problem with Yosemite.

Question: Does anyone know how to fix this?

To scan you will need the Canon ICA driver for your MX. Here is a link to the 10.9 package that should install and work on 10.10

Didn't work. I am still sans printer and scanner. It is really really irritating. I am now definately going to get rid of Yosemite. It has messed up my working life.

What didn't work? Were you able to install the ICA driver but then find that Image Capture does not work? More details makes it easier to solve problems.

In your opening post you said you could print. So are you now saying that you cannot print also?

I am in the same boat. Reinstalled all the most current drivers from Canon. Am able to print but not scan; no apps within Yosemite recognize that the MX310 has scanning capabilities.

If the MX is not showing up in Image Capture, and you have installed the ICA driver I have linked to above, then you could try installing the MX310 scanner driver and the MP Navigator scanning application.

Had already installed both drivers. The MP scanning app stops responding when I click scan (whether or not I click "use driver" - the scanGear driver from Canon). Thanks for trying so far. Any more suggestions?

I think this model only has a USB port. So can you confirm if the MX is connected directly to the Mac via USB cable.

Also, can you confirm what happens when you try to use Image Capture, which uses a different scanner driver to MP Navigator (MP Navigator uses the TWAIN driver while Image Capture uses the ICA driver) so if it also fails then it suggests two scanner drivers are failing.

It is USB only and yes it is connected to the computer. I am able to print, see ink levels, and perform printhead alignment/maintenance via the Canon utility. In Printers and Scanners (Under System Prefs) there is no "Print | Scan" button above the MX310 as there is in previous printer/scanner combos I've added in the past.

The Image Capture app is blank with no useful menu items and does not show connected devices.

    Thanks for confirming the connection.

For you to have the Scan button that you previously saw in Printers & Scanners the ICA driver must be installed. Typically this would be downloaded from the Apple Software Update server when you add the device. And this same ICA driver is used by Image Capture for scanning.

The ICA driver is installed in /Library/Image Capture/Devices and will be labelled CanonIJScannerX, where X is a number. I'm not sure what number it will be for this model. You should already have at least one of these packages in this folder. Can you reply with what you do have in this folder and I will check to see if the MX310 is listed in the respective packages you do have.

With MP Navigator/ScanGear also not working I wonder if you have some other software running that could be impacting the operation of the USB port? Ever had another brand of multifunction device installed on this Mac? If so, what brand?

    I see Canon IJScanner1 through 5, 13f, and 14s. Previously used printer/scanner was HP Officejet 8500 A909g.

Support for the MX310 is provided via the CanonIJScanner1 package. Since you have this package you should also have a working connection via Image Capture.

Can you open System Information (located under Applications > Utilities) and select Printer Software in the left column. In the top right pane select Image Capture Devices which will show the supporting plist files in the bottom right pane. You should see three entries for CanonIJScanner1 and the version of 3.3.4. Can you confirm you have the same entries and version.

Hey guys I'm having the same issue here as well.  Printer is working, scanner is not.  Would love to hear further advice.  I've downloaded all the recommended drivers and the ICA.  No devices are shown in ICA software.  I've just opened system information and have the following, along with Canon IJScanner1, IJScanner2, IJScanner4.

    Image Capture Devices:

      Path: /Library/Image Capture/Devices/Canon IJScanner1.app/Contents/Info.plist

      Version: 3.1.0

      Path: /Library/Image Capture/Devices/Canon IJScanner1.app/Contents/Resources/DeviceInfo.plist

      Version: 3.1.0

      Path: /Library/Image Capture/Devices/Canon IJScanner1.app/Contents/Resources/DeviceMatchingInfo.plist

Canon PIXMA MX310 CUPS Printer Driver v.10.26.0 for Mac OS X, Mac OS X 10.6

I would like to know how one can print on MX310 with Yosemite.  I can't get it to do anything now that I've upgraded the OS, and Canon simply says the printer is not  supported for this OS.  Would have been nice to know before I upgraded to Yosemite, but if I can still print that would be enough.  But how?  I downloaded latest drivers from Canon already.

I'm using an iMac so maybe people who got it to work on other devices have a different solution.
