Q: Yosemite and Canon MX310 scanner are incompatible

I recently installed Yosemite OS on my Mini Mac (2011). Till then my Canon MX310 scanned and printed fine. Now it does not scan any longer and I get this message:

Cannot communicate with scanner for these reasons:

- Scanner is turned off.

- USB cable is disconnected.

It prints fine, no problems.

I looked for a possible solution and found that the Canon site does not list version 10.10 for the MX310. Can I thus assume that my printer/scanner is now obsolete and not compatible with my computer. If this is the case I am seriously peeved that I downloaded Yosemite. This is not my only problem with Yosemite.

Question: Does anyone know how to fix this?

Mac mini (Mid 2011), Mac OS X (10.7.5)

Make sure the permissions and hard disk shows you can read / write ADMIN etc thats what I did  I spent a week trying to figure it out and finally it works fine now

Thanks for very quick reply.  I had no difficulty installing the software, Canon's updated drivers.  That was "successful," but as Canon itself says that will not enable you to print or scan with the MX310 if using Yosemite.  So I don't think I have a problem with permissions, just incompatibility and unavailability of proper drivers for this printer.  I'm therefore confused as to how some people are able to at least print on the MX310 when using Yosemite.

I think the permissions have to be applied on the Canon app  in applications and the hard disk that you can read / Write? I even called canon and they did not have a real answer.

You should check by clicking on the icons of the Hard disk and printer icons as I mentioned, it made the difference and rerun fix disk permissions from the recovery mode with several passes

I'm pretty sure that Canon has not stated that. And if they have then whoever wrote it is wrong. You can install the OS X 10.9 driver for the MX310 on Yosemite. But as its digital signature is not for Yosemite then its installation may be blocked by Gatekeeper. To get past Gatekeeper you can right-click on the installer and select Open from the pop-up menu that appears. You will then get the option to install the printer driver.

If you do have an issue with using the OS X 10.9 version of the MX310 driver on Yosemite then there are two alternate driver suites. One is called Gutenprint and it is free and the other is called Printfab and it costs €49.

There is no need to pay for any print drivers on this Canon as I mentioned I am using Yosemite on my Mx310 and it works fine.

Hello there - I am joining the club of unhappy Yosemite campers.  I can print but not scan.  Originally I couldn't do either.  Canon suggested to download the Printer driver for OS 10.9 and use it on my 10.10  <-- that worked out fine.  Scanner: no luck with the same procedure.  The biggest insult is that Canon blames Apple and Apple blames Canon.  Both of them not terribly concerned of leaving people stranded.  Any third party solutions?  Let's all write to feedback sites of both corporations.    http://www.apple.com/feedback/      for Canon:    https://secure.opinionlab.com/ccc01/comment_card_d.asp

Try downloading an earlier version ex: for OS X  10.8 and run it thru the install i think it will work don't use the the latest pull down for yosemite.. Let me know mine is working great including the scanner make sure you download some of the other utilities etc also for the scanner etc.

Screen Shot 2015-05-12 at 9.08.04 PM.pngI did not download any of that software. I just spotlight searched "Canon MX310" to bring up this window on the right and used the scanning option there instead of Image Capture.

Hi Sam - I got excited reading your post, when I realized that I don't get the result that you are describing.  But let's try again:

    - I find your posted screenshot when I make a search within my Finder

    - I see "Scanner" in the upper right hand corner, but it's Grayed Out = Not available/not recognizable

    - Are you sure you are running OSX 10.10 Yosemite?  If so, what Canon driver version are you using? ( I have 10.3 - 4.8.2  I tried both the latest and the before latest driver that was written for OSX 10.9 neither one work as a scanner only as printer)

Please let me know if you have ANY pointers how to activate my scanner.  Thx, g.

I am definitely using OSX 10.10 Yosemite. As for my Canon, it has never been updated since I bought it about 4 years ago. Was your printer plugged via USB when you tried?

Yes, I am hard wired via USB.  You must have some magic going.  Is there a way I could download your driver?  What driver version are you using?  Maybe a very old version that works with Yosemite (3-4 generations old).  If so let me know which version you have and I go out to hunt.  thanks for writing!
