Q: Yosemite and Canon MX310 scanner are incompatible

I recently installed Yosemite OS on my Mini Mac (2011). Till then my Canon MX310 scanned and printed fine. Now it does not scan any longer and I get this message:

Cannot communicate with scanner for these reasons:

- Scanner is turned off.

- USB cable is disconnected.

It prints fine, no problems.

I looked for a possible solution and found that the Canon site does not list version 10.10 for the MX310. Can I thus assume that my printer/scanner is now obsolete and not compatible with my computer. If this is the case I am seriously peeved that I downloaded Yosemite. This is not my only problem with Yosemite.

Question: Does anyone know how to fix this?

Mac mini (Mid 2011), Mac OS X (10.7.5)

Please understand nothing is clickable, all is greyed out and not navigational. Please let me know what exact OSX version you are using (i.e. 10.10.3 or 10.9.8 or 10.x.x).

When you went onto Canon's site, from what Geographical region / country did you log in?  There may have different driver software's in different markets. I cannot recognize your driver version  11.7.0.0  How did you read that version: from the printer driver or scanner driver?   Something is very strange here.  Please let us know any ideas.

I am in Vancouver, BC, Canada. I don't remember going to Canon's site, I suppose I get the updates automatically. I had this printer for maybe four years, or three.

I found this page with the driver info by following:  System Preferences ---> Printers & Scanners ---> Open Print Queue... ---> Printer ---> Settings

I am not the only one in this list with this driver version.

    Hello Minniehil,

I don't know if you figured out your problem yet, but if you go to this link: http://printerdriverseries.com/canon-pixma-mx310-series-driver/

And at the very top of the page there are two links:

MX310 series CUPS Printer Driver (OS X 10.7/10.8/10.9)10.84.2.014.19 MBDownload
MX310 series Scanner Driver (OS X 10.5/10.6/10.7/10.8/10.9)13.9.2a6.79 MBDownload

My printing was working just fine, so I just decided to install the old scanner driver onto my brand new macbook pro with Yosemite and it worked perfectly!  Now, I use MP Navigator EX and it wouldn't even open before without this new driver installed.

Let me know if it works for you!

Thanks, @drjsimpson! I was struggling with this for some time, and like the original poster and others, I could only get the MX310 printer to work with OS X 10.10.3, despite installing both the Printer and Scanner drivers from the Canon website.

Your tip to "use MP Navigator EX" got me over the hump. I had always used Image Capture (which still won't recognize the scanner), rather than Canon's software. (To be honest, I didn't even know this software existed.) I found that if you go to the Canon site, it will auto-detect Yosemite and not show the "MP Navigator EX Ver. 1.0.8" software available to download. BUT, if you manually specify your OS as 10.9, it's there under the "Software" panel. After I installed this and restarted, I was finally able to use the scanner. It would be nice if it just worked without this additional application (which has multiple additional bells and whistles that I don't need), but at the end of the day, things are working and I can scan documents, so I'm happy!

    Thanks again!

Search no more:)... I just upgraded to Yosemite from Lion (yes, I'm behind) hoping it was an automatic fix for my new MX310 to work and it obviously wasn't. Followed steps in this video - "OSX Yosemite Canon Printer / Scanner Fix": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kKacJamHVVw - which suggests downloading the Lion drivers to get the printer and scanner to work. The printer worked and MP Navigator EX for scanning popped up, I tested that, which worked too... WOOT!

I know it is an old post, but I just experienced this issue with my friend's Canon MX310 Printer/Scanner after he upgraded from OS X Mountain Lion to OS X El Capitan.  It would not print or scan using the latest printer software from Canon's website, which only indicated support for 10.7 to 10.9.  I went to Apple's Support website and downloaded Canon Printer Drivers 3.3 for OS X.  Installed those drivers and problem solved, after I deleted and re-added the printer using Apple's Canon Printer software.  The MX310 can print and scan with OS X El Capitan, so it would also definitely work with Yosemite too.

Thank you, Peter, this worked wonderfully for me! I was going nuts trying to install drivers and follow the instructions on how to get it to work on my iMac/Airport Extreme/Canon MX470. I read dozens of suggestions via the web, but none solved my problem. Your suggestion worked--along with hooking up a USB cable between my printer and Mac to make it happen. Whew, so glad to have my fairly new printer back. I like this Canon lots better than my old Epsons I used over the years, but the Epsons seemed to connect much easier than this Canon. Once it's hooked up, though, it's a great machine.
