Yosemite Installation Not Finishing

OK, so I've read dozens, and dozens of posts about people having trouble upgrading to Yosemite and their "solutions" on this and other forums. I've successfully upgraded 7 other Macs of varying age, 2008 thru 2013. Mac Pros and iMacs. All went smoothly and fairly quickly.

Now, my 2008 Mac Pro with Mavericks at home has given me problems all day.I set it to update and came back over an hour later and it was still on the screen with the gray background, a white box saying "Install OS X", the Apple logo and the animated blue bar. The animation was still moving so I left it for a while, but I really needed to use the computer so I shut it down and it went right back to reinstalling, slow at first then zipped across and back to the white box screen where it just stays. I left it on this screen for a few hours. It did restart itself once but then back to where I was before. Knowing that many people posted that you shouldn't shut it down, I keep trying that anyway. I was able to see the menu "Choose language" but no image on screen, then it popped to the menu that has the Disk Utility, Logs, Startup Disk, etc.

I saved the log with errors only, but it saved everything. So I just cut out the lines that had the word Failed, Error and Not. Figured it was better not to clutter up the forums with lots of unnecessary info.

I also tried restarting in Safe Mode, but I get stuck on the first Apple screen with the little gray process bar. This bar gets about 50% then comes to a crawl. I put a piece of tape on the screen just to see if it was actually moving. It did creep a pixel or two at first then stopped.

I also have another drive with Lion (typing in it now) and have full access to my drive that I'm trying to ins all Yosemite on so it seems to fine. Did permissions, did Verify Disk. No issues. The drive in question has 51 GB available. Is this enough? It also has a Boot Camp partition.

Let me know if need to provide any more info. Log errors below. Thanks in advance.

I have thought several people would have chimed in by now. Granted, it's only been 12 hours or so.

One other odd thing I've noticed is when the installer is "stuck" on the white box-blue progress bar screen, if I move the mouse to the top of the screen, this white box goes away and I get the menu at top with the Disk Utility and other basic system stuff. Then it never gets passed that point.

As I'm writing this, the white box screen was up and it sounded like a hard drive (I have three internals) spun down. Then a minute later it looks like the Mac is in sleep mode with the pulsing light on the front. Don't know if this is a problem, but I can't change any energy settings at this point.

I'm not sure how far the installer has altered my Mavericks install, but is there a way at this point to revert back? I tried freeing up a lot more disk space, removing many old files. I also moved the Yosemite installer out of the apps folder to see if it would ignore the upgrade and just boot into Mavericks.

Nothing.

I know a clean install is the answer, especially since this OS has been upgraded many times. Whatever came on a Mac Pro 2008 is what I started with so there's probably a ton of crap in there, just don't know how to easily tell what is garbage.

Dec 12, 2014 8:57 PM in response to Alex Campuzano1

I now realize that my Mac is going into sleep pretty quickly. Leaving run all day did nothing since it was probably in sleep mode the entire time. Tonight I kept hitting the space bar every 10 min. and voila, I got to the agreement page, blah, blah the the actual install. Then it came up with this error:

"Unable to modify a Windows boot.ini file because it is set up in a customized configuration." Please retry. I seem to recall many moons ago, I tried to enlarge the Boot Camp partition, but it didn't work. Yosemite installer I think sees something is off and can't get past it. Is there anyway I can fix this before I backup again and reformat? I can boot into Windows XP or 7 no problem.

Thanks.

Dec 12, 2014 9:48 PM in response to Alex Campuzano1

The boot.ini file is used when you have a multi-boot type windows setup (like XP and Windows Vista and Linux and OS X?, etc) Since you tried to enlarge the Boot Camp partition many moons ago perhaps you might take a look a the boot.ini file and see if you see what the problem is with it. At the web page http://www.techrepublic.com/article/typical-bootini-file/ is explanations on what all the stuff in a boot.ini file means - maybe this will give you a clue as to what is customized configuration and how to "uncustomize" it? In any event make a spare copy of this important file in case you need to get it back to what was working so you can still boot up Windows XP or 7.

You might try and look at /var/log/install.log rather than the Console log files to see where the installer had a problem? Maybe post the last 100 lines of this file (and look for any personal info that might not be a good idea to post here - like personal info or IP addresses or ???)

Because of the stage of the failure during Yosemite install it looks like some of the Yosemite stuff has been put on the disk to replace the previous version of OS X you had, and so getting back to the old version is no longer possible I don't think, but see what other people have to suggest before deciding to reformat the drive and start all over.

Do you have a Time Machine backup of the disk before you did the Yosemite upgrade?

Good luck...

Thanks for the reply. For what it's worth, when I do a Get Info on the boot drive, it says "Version: 10.9.5" Curiously, I can only find info in the install.log for December 11, when the last post I made about the boot.ini file was tonight, December 12. Since I can't boot into the drive that's trying to update, I'm on an external drive running Lion so I had to search manually for the invisible folder "private" on the main boot drive. Here's the last 100 lines or so. I made this list as bulleted so we have some line numbers to reference. Don't think there's any sensitive info in there.

Around line 28, I see an empty path that appears to be the source of an error in line 32 about a path being "nil." Just a guess though.

Dec 13, 2014 2:30 PM in response to Alex Campuzano1

The message at line 28 is simply referring to the top level of the install volume called "/" - so don't think this and the message on line 32 are related. In fact I looked at my install.log and see the same message at line 32.

Looking at this last bit of the install.log file, looks like everything was normal and it was gonna do a restart with autologin so that cleanup stuff would happen. So am guessing that is the "state" that your system called "Als-Home-Mac" is now in - wanting to finish the Yosemite upgrade. (my install.log file looks a lot different after this point, but I suspect this is because my install finished and your's hasn't yet finished everything.

Your original post said you had 51GB free - that is plenty - I think Apple says at least 15GB free is a minimum.

Since you have another mac you can try and login to "Als-Home-Mac" from your Lion mac - try and do this from a Terminal window (use the IP address for Als-Home-Mac and whatever is the shortform user - in this case I assume it's "al" but use whatever it really is):

ssh al@ip_address_of_als_home_mac

you will be prompted for a password - once in (you may get a message about "refused" in which case you didn't have remote logins enabled on als-home-mac) you can see whats going on in various ways:

tail -f /var/log/install.log

will monitor the progress of whatever gets written to the install.log file (you can control-c anytime and not affect the install.log file). You could also try

top

to get a list of processes and how much cpu, memory, etc they are using. This can tell you if nothing (%CPU will be very low or possibly 0) or something is really going on (very high % - maybe as much as 100% or possibly even more).

Sometimes the install takes a long long time - not sure why - but have seen Yosemite install take several hours in some cases. So it's important to know if there is something or really really nothing.

In the event you can't get logged in (remote logins not enabled - this is done in "Sharing" System Preferences) I would look a bit further back in the install.log file (the fact that you only selected errors only applies to what the installer shows you during the install process, not what gets written to the install.log file, so the install.log file contains everything that happened during the upgrade).

If you don't know the IP address of the als-home-mac system try this (and assuming your Lion mac IP address is 192.168.1.123):

ping 192.168.1.255

this will ping the entire subnet (assuming you have a 255.255.255.0 netmask). You can see this sort of info from

ifconfig -a

Sorry, can't be more help, but I'm hoping that if you give the install process lots of time to finish, it ultimately will, but the above might give some hints if anything or nothing is really going on.

Good luck...

Dec 13, 2014 7:41 PM in response to dot.com

All right, so I gave up and wiped my drive clean. Booted to the USB stick with Yosemite and guess what, stuck at the friggin' gray screen with the box that says Install OS X. I know people keep saying to give it some time, but this is a blank disk. Zero files to move and move back. Why would this take sooooooo long!!!

I then booted from my backup 10.9.5 volume (don't ask me why this backup works since it was made after starting this whole mess). Anyway, the Yosemite dmg was on there so I launched it and selected the now blank fusion disk. I was able to see the screen that let me select the language and other stuff, but it just won't work. What the ****? Is this dmg just an updater or can it be used for a blank install?

There are no files to move back and forth so why on earth would this process take so long, assuming it will ever work? Is the fusion drive the issue? I'm about to jump out a window with this. Ridiculous. This is what I used to make fun of Windows users having to go through. Gees.

Dec 13, 2014 8:00 PM in response to Alex Campuzano1

Just so I'm sure where you are at -

You are trying to install Yosemite on a Mac Pro 2008 model - Are you certain that the Mac Pro is a model "MacPro3,1" and not a "MacPro1,1" or "MacPro2,1" - it's not when you bought it, it's when it was made that is important.

If it is a MacPro3,1 or newer, it should be a pretty quick thing to do a "clean" install of Yosemite on this hardware if there are no hardware problems.

A new Yosemite install is under 15GBytes I think (without any extra apps). If your're not sure what model MacPro is you can check from the serial number on the machine. Do a google search to find one of the places that can check the serial number and tell you exactly what model and options it has, etc.

When you do the install -- open up the Log window and show all messages - not just the errors and see if there is some sort of hint about where it's hanging.

Don't forget - that if it still is not completing - you could boot it up in target mode and attach it to your other Mac via Firewire and take a look at what is on the disk in the macpro and see if you get some hints from the state of the disk logs etc

Also - is the mac pro attached to the internet so that the install process can communicate to Apple if it wants to during the install? Don't think it matters, but it can't hurt...

Good luck...

Dec 13, 2014 8:26 PM in response to dot.com

I'm 99% sure it's a 3,1 Mac Pro, but I'll double check. I only have the one computer so no need for target mode. I have an external FW 800 drive with Lion that I can boot into or my Mavericks backup that somehow works. I'll put up the logs to see. The tower is always hooked up to the internet even though some of the log entries mention something about not being able to connect. Don't know what I could do about that.

Is Yosemite that different from Mavericks that would prevent this installation to complete when the previous one had no issues?

I'll post back in a few.

Dec 13, 2014 8:58 PM in response to Alex Campuzano1

Lots of people are having Yosemite problems - so don't feel like you're the only one.

No idea what percentage of people are really having problems compared to the number of people who have installed with no problems. Am guessing it's a low percentage otherwise apple would be doing a lot more to solve the problem. But there are really a lot of posts from people having issues with Yosemite from WiFi to slow to mail to memory leaks to etc, etc, etc

You said you had already updated several other macs (to yosemite?) so I just assumed you had another mac handy to the Mac Pro you're having problems with.

But if not you can still just boot up your computer from the Lion disk and you can just look at the System Information program (About this mac, then More information and look at the info in Hardware Overview - the Model Identifier is the second item in the list. You're probably right about it being the 3,1 model otherwise you would not have been able to download the Yosemite installer as it checks what hardware is trying to do the download before it will let you do it since only certain models are able to install Yosemite. You will get the same model identifier info no matter what OS version you do it with on your Mac Pro.

But check the install logs on the clean install disk after booting from the Lion disk and hopefully something will show up to give a hint as to what is the problem. Don't forget to open the Log window during the install and you can follow along as it's doing the install if you want.

This is an early 2008 Mac Pro 3,1. Good to go there. I'm just at a loss. I shouldn't have to lug this 50 lbs. computer to the Apple store for this.

These are the only items on the blank drive after the latest install attempt:

OS X Install Data/

/ia.log

/index.sproduct

/MacOSXInstaller.choiceChanges

/minstallconfig.xml

/OSInstallAttr.plist

/OSX_10_10_IncompatibleAppList.pkg

This is the complete log after the last install attempt:

Something is causing a problem - see the message at

Dec 13 19:17:27 Mac-Pro.local storagekitd[458]: Disk queue stuck, last operation: (null)

the previous message was at time 19:05:52 - so something took 12 minutes to figure out there was a problem -

Are you sure the disk you're trying to install on is good?

What kind and how large of a disk is it? Is it new or have you been using for a while?

Up to that point my install.log file is almost exactly like yours and after that point i don't see anything similar.

Perhaps you can put this disk thru DiskUtility (from the installer you can run Disk Utility before the actual installation takes place - ask if you don't know how). Put this disk thru single-pass secure erase or even better a 3-pass secure erase - this will test the entire disk so if there are bad spots this should find them (it will erase everthing on the disk so if there is anything of value on the disk make sure to copy it somewhere else first). This takes a long -very long - time on big disks so let it run till it finishes. My guess is that you will get disk errors during this process that will tell you for sure that the disk is not working, but hope that is not the case. How reliable has this disk been in the past if you've had for a while and if it's new you might check into where you got it and see if you can get a replacement and explain all the problems you've had. Do you have another disk to try another Yosemite install on? it doesn't need to be big to verify that the disk is the problem (if the install works fine with another disk you have pretty much determined the cause of the problem (probably but not for sure as there are other things that might be an issue like the disk interface in the mac pro or the motherboard or ....

So the bottom line is that it appears you have a hardware problem during the install with the disk - but this is just a guess based on the above.

I'm getting tired so will try and check in to check for your reply tomorrow...

Good luck and post any updated information about status of disk test...

later...

So when I got up this morning, it appears that Yosemite finally installed. Then it looked like it updated my backup copy of Mavericks. Then I realized the startup drive wasn't visible on the desktop. After I turned it on, I have my original wiped drive with Yosemite. Success. I was able to install the latest Adobe CC apps I need. I then looked at the Migration Assistant. I turned off a few items, but before I saw how much info was to be transferred, I hit start. It said it would take 4.5 hours with no way of canceling Normally that's fine, but I was hoping to get some work done here at home. Great now I have to go into the office.

I then somehow kicked a wire and knocked the power off. Amazing. Rebooted and it went right back to the migration assistant, but just sits there at "Starting up..." and "This Mac" shown above. Before it showed my backup drive I selected and This Mac. I don't see the light on the external drive where the files to be transferred live. I'm going to just leave it while I trudge to the office. I know it said over four hours, but I'd feel better if I saw it doing something before I left.

Did I screw up the assistant? Also, if this is just hung up, how could I cancel the process? I can't force quit and rebooting just goes right back to it. I think I might also by some rope on the way home....

Thanks for all your help.

Dec 14, 2014 5:41 PM in response to Alex Campuzano1

Hard to guess how Apple comes up with the estimate for how long the upgrade will take, but without knowing how much Migration Assistant has to copy (it gives you a total size depending on what items you tell it to restore) but several hours sounds in the ballpark for several hundred GB's of stuff (apps and user files). Hope you don't run into any more disk problems, but don't think you screwed up the migration assistant. Good luck...

Dec 14, 2014 9:35 PM in response to dot.com

The migration assistant worked out just fine, minus taking 7+ hours. At the end, it gave me an error and listed the two accounts I had previously. I hit continue and the accounts were indeed created and transferred. I'm still checking things out, but everything seems to be in place. Updating some apps. On that topic, is there a way to scan the system for incompatible apps?

Just gotta set up a quick Boot Camp partition...

Thanks again for you help. Even just bouncing questions/ideas off someone else is very helpful.
