how to create space on recovery disk to reboot iMac

My iMac has the grey screen upon turning on. When I attempt to restore OS X mavericks, there is not enough space on the recovery drive.

When I try to erase the disk, the error message says it is unable to erase.

Help!

If you are specifically trying to install on the "Recovery Partition," then that's correct, the Recovery Partition doesn't have enough space for OS X. Choose the part of the drive you have reformatted (erased).
