Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT

Looks like no one’s replied in a while. To start the conversation again, simply ask a new question.

Sluggish MBP - Should I buy new?

My MBP is now 4 years old. It's been showing sluggish performance for at least 18 months now. I've had independent people look at it, and I've brought it to the Store and had a Genius take a look. I get a lot of pinwheels, applications can take up to a full minute or even more to load, and I'm running out of HDD space. My independent guy thought the HDD was failing, but the Genius did analysis and said no. He said all was running fine, but I know it's not like it used to be.

I have a 2.66 i7 chip and today's MBP's have a standard 2.5 i7 chip. Is it really a step down? I'm not super techy, so I need help on that. I'd like more RAM, as I'm maxed out at 8GB. I have just 75GB of HDD space left on my 500GB drive. I also see the advantage of solid state drive.

Before I spend $3000 on a new MBP, I just want to do my homework.

I use my system for relatively minor stuff. I'll have most things open all at once, but nothing that I see is particularly intense on the processor or the memory. I'll typically have the following apps open:

  • AppleMail
  • Contacts
  • Notes
  • Messages
  • Safari with 4-8 windows open
  • iPhoto
  • a bunch of pdf's
  • iTunes

When I open Activity Monitor, it generally is not showing that my system is tapped. A fairly typical load profile is like I have right now this morning as I write this:

  • Physical Memory: 8GB
  • Mem Used: 7.95 GB
  • Virtual Mem: 12.06 GB
  • Memory pressure is green
  • CPU has 90%+ idle

I do have a program on my system that is a bit of a hog. I sell digital x-ray machines, including 3D imaging systems and I generally need to shut most other things down to open that program. Even when I open that imaging program, the memory and CPU specs don't get maxed out. I just don't get it.

Any thoughts/ideas are appreciated.

Here's my Etrecheck report:

Problem description:

General sluggishness. Pinwheel, slow to open apps, overall deterioration of performance.

For the things you do, that "old" MBP should suffice. If you want to take advantage of a SSD, simply replace your existing HDD (which indeed might be the cause of the issues you're experiencing*). You could even replace your DVD drive with an SSD.

* Disk Utility and Apple Hardware Test aren't very reliable when it comes to detecting drive issues. You can give the (free) trial version of SmartUtility a spin. If the drive passes all tests, it might be an idea to make a backup, erase the disk, reinstall only the applications you really need, and copy back your documents.

Dec 12, 2014 5:48 AM in response to TheMBucket

As Esquared says "For the things you do, that "old" MBP should suffice" : absolutely correct, you have enough Ram and enough free disk space.

You can do following:

- Uninstall Crashplan, because it seems already partly gone, do not reinstall it.

- Uninstall SafeguardMonitoring, you do not need it, and it may be counterproductive.

- Uninstall (Klieme) TimeMachineScheduler: counterproductive and not really compatible, read about this in pondini.org.

- If you absolutely need ParagonNTFS, update to the last version, but remember that you do not need it to read NTFS disks (OSX can do that), only to write. If possible uninstall it.

- The same for Citrix.

- Update Flashplayer

- In SystemPreferences->Users&Groups->LoginItems remove all entries except HPScanApplication (that is: if you use the HP scanner, if not remove it also), with the minus sign underneath

- I don't know Wondershare Helper (video converting? or PDF converter?), but double check if it is compatible with Mavericks.

- Linc Davis would recommend to uninstall PathFinder, and I agree to that also.

- The Seagate Goflex 2TB that you use for TimeMachine should do much better without the Seagate software: uninstall everything (if you do not find it, say so and we will do it by hand)

- Set GateKeeper at least one step more secure (SystemPreferences->Security and Privacy) to "Mac Appstore and identified developers".

Now restart and empty the trash bin. It must be faster now.

Please post back again with a new Etrecheck list.

Lex & Esquared

Thanks for your thoughtful responses.

I've done many of the things that Lex suggested with the following failures(operator error I'm sure):

  • CrashPlan is my off-site backup. I'd rather not delete that. Is there a specific reason to get rid of that?
  • Could not find the TimeMachineScheduler in my application folder. How else do I uninstall it?
  • Same on PathFinder
  • Same on Paragon
  • Not sure how to uninstall Seagate software on the external drive. Other reformatting, and that will kill all backups. Any other way?

After the things I did do...not a lot of change.

======================================

Based on your responses, I've decided on the following course of action:

  • Keep my existing MBP
  • Replace existing HDD with SSD
  • Fresh install of everything...most of what I use is inherent with OSx. I don't want to bring "bad stuff" from existing setup to a new setup, so I'm thinking NOT to do a TimeMachine Restore
  • New battery

Do you know of a step-by-step for this process? Starting with your recommendation of a 1TB (750GB min) SSD? I need this to be as plug & play simple as possible. I'm a fairly average user, and the physical install is no problem. I just want to make sure on the configuration settings etc.

Thank You

Dec 15, 2014 9:57 AM in response to TheMBucket

- OK, keep Crashplan going.

- TimeMachineScheduler is in SystemPreferences: open the dmg file with which you installed it, choose the uninstaller. If you do not have that dmg file anymore download it here: http://klieme.com/TimeMachineScheduler.html

- Paragon NTFS is also in SystemPreferences. A sloppy software without decent uninstaller, not even instructions on how to uninstall. In SystemPreferences CTL+click on the Paragon applet choose "remove". Then in Finder go to MacintoshHD->System->Library->LaunchAgents and delete the com.paragon...plist.

- PathFinder is on the main Menubar on the right side, click and quit from this menu. Read here how to remove it completely (ignore all ads on this site):

http://support.cocoatech.com/kb/installation-and-compatibility/how-do-i-complete ly-uninstall-path-finder

- The Seagate software is installed on your mac: look for it in Applications and Utilities (maybe it is in a folder in there), if it is not there start Launchpad from Applications and see if it is there, if then drag it to the Trash, if not we remove by hand. Tell me and run a new list.

- Set GateKeeper more secure.

- Click the apple menu (most left apple icon on the menu bar), hold the Alt(option) key and choose SystemInformation, on the left choose "Power" and on the right note two things: the "cycle count" and the "Condition" . Tell me.

We can talk about the SSD and "Clean" install after this.

6: that means replace battery asap (you already expected this, didn't you? 👿 )

I advise to buy the real thing, not a cheap non-brand. For the future, you can read here all about how to treat modern hitech Lithium battaries:

http://batteryuniversity.com

In a few hours I will be on a 1000km trip, back again tomorrow morning MET. May be you send a last etrecheck list for me to find here...

Dec 16, 2014 5:03 AM in response to Lexiepex

Again Lex...thank you so very much for all your help.

Since I was fully expecting to spend $3000 on a new MBP, buying a new battery is welcome. And I will get a real one from Apple. What is your recommendation on SSD brand?

For the life of me I can't find PathFinder. I finally was able to get to the uninstall website, but it says "In the Finder tab" and "In the General tab". Sorry I seem to be such a dolt, but I can't find anything on my system that says PathFinder.

Just arrived, going to unpack and then to bed.

When you do the esquared thing, also do

MacintoshHD->System->Library->Extensions delete com.seagate.driver... and seagate.storage.driver..

(be careful in this extensions folder)

Then restart the mac and empty the trash.

Disconnect the Seagate external for a while and let's see what happens.

SSD: this would certainly give a speed boost when loading apps. I would buy a ˜500GB one, keep in mind that you need more free space (EG 50GB+) on it then on a HDD, because the GarbageCollection works much better when you have enough free space. Do not install Trim: sometimes leads to traffic issues on the file level, not possible in Yosemite without giving up a security level, and the GC on a modern SSD is very good thus does not need Trim.

One of the best one at the moment is the Samsung Evo PRO 480GB: lots of overprovisioning (for the GC and faulty 'pixels'), but very good also are the OWC and Crucial SSDs.

Lex & Esquared:

  • Pathfinder - gone
  • Could not find either of the Seagate files in Extensions.

Re-booted.

Questions now are:

  • Trim? Whats that?
  • I have a 500GB now and I'm bumping up against my limit. I'd like to go larger. Any reason I shouldn't do a 1TB SSD?

May I presume that a 1TB version of the Samsung Evo is just as good at the 480 GB?

I currently keep the majority of my files and "stuff" on Dropbox, so that transfer won't be required. Then it's just Yosemite, a few Apps, and iWork. I'd like to dump MS Office 2011 and not even put it on my new SSD.

Any thoughts/pitfalls/suggestions?

Again...thanks for all your help.

1 . Seagate: there is one Seagate kext (the others mentioned are in it): just delete this one and all are gone.

It is in MacintoshHD->System->Library->Extensions (be careful there...)

2 . Trim is a command that you can activate for use with a non-Apple SSD: it tells the SSD what files are deleted in OSX mac. You can get this command in OSX by compromising a particular kext file, in Yosemite this will kill your mac so that you can not start it at all, to make it happening you have to disable the kext signing security level for all kexts. The Trim command was used a number of years ago when the SSD's own GarbageCollection was weak or even non-existant. There were and are however issue with the Trim command with "traffic failures" on the file level traffic. So lately I always advise to buy a SSD with a good controller and (thus) good Garbage Collection: Crucial, or OWC (and Samsung EVO 850 PRO, as the only Samsung recommendable SSD). That is why I said do not install Trim.

If you want a 1TB SSD, why not? Keep in mind that free space is more important on a SSD, because of the GarbageCollection (amongst other things). The bigger SSDs are the same as the smaller ones, but for the write speed which is a bit higher for the bigger ones.

3 . MS Office works perfectly well in Yosemite. A donation alternative is LibreOffice.

Yes as these older machines start running the newer OSSs, say 10.8 and on they get rather laggy. I've installed SSDs on one as old as a 2009 MacBook Unibody and that w/ only 4 GB RAM. They make an incredible difference!

Did you go w/ the Samsung Evo PRO? Or something else? Are you still running Yosemite? I've been avoiding it.

Sluggish MBP - Should I buy new?
