Under Messages Preferences and Add Account are always greyed out. I cannot receive or send messages from my Mac.
I had the same problem on my MacBook Air. Not only are "Preferences" and "Add Account" greyed out, but so are almost all others. I deleted from Library:Preferences com.apple.iChat.AIM.plist, emptied the trash, and restarted, at which time com.apple.iChat.AIM.plist reappeared and the problem persisted. After two or three more times, as I opened Messages I was required to sign in to iCloud [using an older sign-in email address (@mac.com)]. Messages suddenly came alive with messages from 2012 and 2013.

This 'might' help: > System Preferences > Internet Accounts > Your account name > Uncheck then check 'Messages' > Now go back to Messages and see if it took action. Hope that helps. Thank you!
Thank you. Oddly, I did not find "Messages" listed under Internet Accounts. Included are Mail, Contacts, and 7 more, but not Messages. But, as I said above, once I signed into my previous iCloud account Messages came alive.
So, is your question solved? If so, mark your question as solved. It will help others find this; if they have a similar issue. Thank you!

My "similar" problem is solved, but since I didn't originate the thread I am unable to do as you suggest. I wish I could, but as I understand from Eric Root's post, only the originator of the question can mark it as solved.
