I am planning to upgrade my MacBook Air to a MacBook Pro 15. I am still deciding between the 512GB or the 1TB upgrade. What are your thoughts on upgrading to 1TB? Is the cost worth it? I do a lot of photography and the 1TB upgrade would be nice but not sure if it's worth it.

I still have 770 GB available.
One thing to keep in mind is that you will not be able to upgrade later if you change your mind. The SSD is soldered to the motherboard. That is why I went with the 1TB. My old MacBook Pro has a 512GB skinny drive.
So to upgrade from 512GB to 1 TB is $480.00 Canadian.

I have the Synology DS916+ and put all of my larger files on it. Like movies, pictures, etc.

If you use an external HD to offload data, then you'll still need another external HD to backup that one.
If you're not sure which to go with, always go for the larger one; I've never heard anyone complain about too much storage.
If you're talking about a 2017 model, it can never be upgraded, so the time is now.
To me, it seems like the choice is clear, get the 1TB.

If you want to upgrade your mid 2014 Retina MacBook Pro to 1 TB SSD, I would suggest getting an SSD from OWC.
They specialize in Mac upgrades.

We have no idea what constitutes "a lot of photography" or how much disk space you'll need.
The rule used to be that you could never have too much disk space. But in the days of multi terabyte drives, you may find that you don't come close to filling it before it's time to buy a new machine. Then again, you might fill it in a week. We have no way to know.
Keep in mind that large external hard drives are dirt cheap these days. You can always buy one (or more) and offload what you don't need to keep with you all the time.
