Q: Why SO many random DCIM Folders?  I want ONE!

I have an ipone 4s.  I have had an iPhone for over 5 years now.  Before the DCIM folder would hold 1000 pictures.  As soon as I would take another picture (ei 1001) then it would start another folder for those thousand pictures.  So by time I got into the 5000+ I had over 5 folders.  They are random (ei 851PKYZB, 851XTGOR, 914ELZYG, etc.) Last month or so when I plugged my phone into the computer to copy my photos onto my desktop I had ONE folder.  It was glorious not to have to open every folder to figure out where the newest pictures were.

Then today I plug my phone into my computer to copy pictures over and I now have a folder for every 100 pictures.  YES TONS and TONS of folders (55 folders to be exact) and no rhythm or reason to the numbering system.  Some with only 1 picture in them, as I delete a lot of pictures after transferring to my computer.  So when I wanted to find todays pictures I had to open over half of them to find my pictures.

HOW do I get it back to ONE folder?  I understand the reason there is a DCIM folder to begin with, but I really think I should be able to have 1 folder or at least have them numbered 100APPLE, 101APPLE, or something that is numeric and I know that the very last folder are the new pictures.  Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  (I have the newest iOS 8.1.2) Thanks in advance.

You DO NOT need a 3rd party tool. Windows Camera and Scanner Wizard is built in to every version of Windows since Windows 2000.

You've mentioned this "Windows Camera and Scanner Wizard" dozens of times, but as far as I can tell, it does not exist after Windows XP.  So either tell us where to find this, or stop referring to a nonexistent wizard.

If you mean the Windows 8.1 "Import Pictures and Videos" wizard that I explained in my previous post, then you should call it by its actual name and point to instructions since it's not a tool users can find through a start screen search.

eeeeek PLEASE don't criticise the Lawrence - it will end it a strop ending in a report and a deletion

However can I, without a self awarded God tag - put this to rest as I have actually spoken to Apple

The problem, according to Apple is nothing to do with them but a Microsoft coding issue, I'm a tad surprised the all knowing Lawrence hasn't informed everyone of this, but apparently Apple have repeatedly told Microsoft to get their coding in order and THAT is the reason the DCIM debacle exists. It will possibly be fixed with the Windows 10 release but according to Apple don't hold your breath.

Wow, that Apple response is the biggest nonsense I've heard from Apple in a while.  Do you have anything documented on it?  To what Apple people were you speaking?  I'd like to try and confirm that this isn't just conjecture from one Apple rep.

The truth is, when Apple creates Apple device drivers for the Windows OS, it is Apple's responsibility to comply with Windows OS requirements, not the other way around.  Can they ask Microsoft to include drivers by default?  Sure.  But it's the height of hubris to tell a company to "fix" its OS to suit your hardware or driver preferences.  Suck it up, and write a driver that actually works with the way Windows is meant to work.

What makes it even more absurd is that Apple could, if they chose, build in this desired capability into their Apple hardware driver for Windows OS.  It could easily show the Windows File Explorer the camera roll just as it displays on the device and, ironically, just as it displays in the Windows "Import pictures and videos" wizard, edits and all.  The proof?  Microsoft and Google both have software for Windows that does this very thing, even if you're viewing the files through the Windows File Explorer.  That's right.  Windows File Explorer shows Picasa-edited and Photos-app-edited pictures with the edits intact.  There's no reason Apple can't do the same.

But hey, let's blame the Windows OS for Apple's substandard driver.  Riiiiiiiight.

Hi, Yes I did think it was unlikely but I am jut relaying the message. They told me that over the online help. They did go on to complain Microsoft 'had caused them endless problems' by not amending their code.

I feel exactly the same - and more frustrating.  I copy them all to my c drive.  Then i go back to DCIM on iPhone via Explorer to try and delete them: IT WON'T LET ME DELETE!!

There should be one folder on the iPhone which if you open should have files listed by date, that you can open in LARGE ICON VIEW or DETAILS view and be able to a) delete a whole bunch or b) drag them to your CDRIVE  and c) leave a few on the iPHone.

That doesn't happen.  It becomes a major time-sucking-endeavor that I have to schedule for a weekend.

This is not the Apple I know and love Guys.

That kills iPhoto, Photos, Aperture, windows Camera Wizard, Image Capture, well you get it.

How selfish is it to break it for millions of people because you can't be bothered to use the correct tools.

Wrong.  This is about changing Windows drivers, not changing IOS.  Apple's Windows drivers could easily show a single folder to Windows File Explorer just as it shows a single folder on the device itself.  It would not require a change to the operating system on the device.  IOS could keep its hidden multi-subfolder structure.

The driver could simply duplicate the view available in the Windows 8.1 "Import Pictures and Videos" wizard that I explained in my previous post.  None of the tools you mentioned would be negatively affected.

This is Apple's problem.  Apple decided to create a bad Windows driver for Apple devices.  Apple's device doesn't require any change.  But Apple's drivers and software for Windows stink.

And please stop referencing a non-existent "windows Camera Wizard".  It hasn't existed since Windows XP.

Don't tell me what to do, especially when you are full of it. It's available for Vista, 7 and 8, you really don't know what you are talking about. Bye.

I posted a few pages back agreeing that this is indeed annoying. After reading the posts about using the camera wizard to import them I couldn't find a 'camera wizard' per se, however the functionality it is indeed there in Windows 7 (which I used).

When you connect your iPhone to your Windows PC, you should get the small pop-up window asking you what you would like to do (if not you need to reactivate this). Instead of clicking 'open files and folders in windows explorer', towards the bottom of the pop-up box there is an option that says 'import pictures and videos' (or something like that). Choose that option and windows will begin scanning your iPhone. You can interrupt the scanning process to choose a different save location. Then it'll scan your iPhone again and import every single last picture and video, and dump them into a single folder that is named with the date.

After using the import wizard, if you disconnect your iPhone and take some pictures, and then re-import on that same day, it'll only import the new pictures as you'll be saving into the save folder. If however you connect your phone again the next day with new pictures on it, I suspect it'll import every single picture again as the date will be different, so it'll create a new folder with the current date and since there are no existing photos in it, it should import all the photos again.

It's not as convenient as Image Capture on Mac, as you cannot choose specific images to import based upon thumbnails previews, but it sure as heck beats the alternative options on Windows.

Remember that Windows 8.1 "Import Pictures and Videos" wizard that I explained in my previous post?  It can show it as a single folder in chronological order.  Remember the iPhone?  It can show it as a single folder in chronological order.  Solution: program the Windows driver to do the same thing.  Not complicated.

Ah, yes, foiled by the double-whammy "full of it" and "not the boss of me" arguments.

Oh, and by the way genius, that's not an import wizard.

    "Installation"

    "Import"

    Not synonymous.

No, actually, it doesn't work the same way, and you can't find it the same way.  It works quite differently than the non-existent tool you condescendingly referenced dozens of times without actually providing any guidance or instructions.  You just kept ripping on inquirers for using the "wrong tool"... while ironically referring them to the "wrong tool."

It's not worth it anymore. They have no logical reason to keep returning to this thread, yet they do. One tells everyone to buy a Mac or switch to Android. He has offered zero help. The other attempts to offer alternate solutions, but does so in such a condescending manner that it completely negates any advice being given. One of them even told us to, "Do what you want," but keeps coming back to say we're doing it wrong. I can't call it what it is because I'll get reported and my post will be deleted. I've been going to internet forums and message boards for many, many years. It's always the same. The ones who have been there the longest always end up with a "holier than thou" complex. Add to that the points & level system of the Apple forums and it gets worse. Plus the fact that, being a tech help forum, some users are more knowledgeable of the subject matter than others, and that's a recipe for some very large egos. And they're all going to stick together. It's like an online version of high school. As I said in an earlier post, I don't care how many points a user has or what level they're on. It's all meaningless fluff as far as I'm concerned. How a person carries themselves when they're helping others is more important to me.

The fact of the matter is, Windows Explorer worked perfectly in the past, not only to browse our iPhone photos, but to transfer them to a Windows PC as well. I realize updates to iOS changed that and we may not get the complete functionality that we had before, but changes can be made to make it a better user experience for us and to return it back to, partially at least, what it was. And yes, I've submitted feedback and encourage everyone else to as well. Many people like the ease of use of using Windows Explorer. Many people simply aren't that tech savvy and are more comfortable with it than other software. Many people, including myself, will continue to use it. That doesn't make us wrong. Anyone who feels that way doesn't have to come back to this thread. I'm more than happy to help make it a little easier for anyone who comes here.

My issue is that you can't sort by date.  So I have to troll around to find the newest folder.

Iphone is constantly ******* me off with their "upgrades" that only cause frustration!
