iPhoto doesn't work... what to do?

After upgrading my MacBook Air to Yosemite, iPhoto doesn't work... what to do? I believe I still have a library, but it just won't launch.

MacBook Air, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

Does the iPhoto icon look crossed out?

Then you need to update or upgrade iPhoto to version 9.6. Only that version will run with Yosemite.

Try to download an update from the App Store.

If no update is available:

  • Delete iPhoto from the Applications folder. (don't empty the Trash).
  • Then sign into the App Store with your Apple ID and install iPhoto from the Featured tab of the App Store.

After upgrading iPhoto your iPhoto Library will need upgrading too. Make a backup copy of your iPhoto Library, before you launch iPhoto for the first time.

If your previous iPhoto version was version 7.1.2 or earlier, you will need to download and run the iPhoto Library Upgrader.
