How are my documents handled in iCloud?

Question

How are my documents handled in iCloud?

I want to either download my documents to my Mavericks machine or make sure they are safely transferred and useable on that machine when I do upgrade. I have two Yosemite machines and some iOS devices but [as far as I can recall] did not upgrade to iCloud Drive because of the mixed environment. I'm now ready to upgrade my Mavericks machine to Yosemite but want to be sure I can still access and use the stuff up there on the old iCloud already [tho I don't know where it is, really]. Any suggestions?

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1), Mid-2011

I think I might have resolved this = I never did put many documents in the cloud so just emailed them to myself and now will be able to download and install Yosemite. I'm pretty sure these were either old docs or extras so probably not that important but it still confused me to have a mixed environment and I think it will improve with the upgrade.

Don't upgrade to iCloud Drive, if you want to use "Documents in the Cloud" with Mavericks. Otherwise you will only be able to use the iCloud Webpage to access your documents on the Mavericks machine.

Thanks - I had found those articles but was still a bit confused, but as I said above [probably at the same time as you were replying! Thanks!] they're now safely transferred and I can now get all the machines running the same thing....appreciate the help and links.
