Airplay over subnets

I have a problem with Airpaying over subnets and was hoping to find some guidance on this forum. I have a cable modem connected to the internet with IP address set to 192.168.0.1 and DHCP enabled giving out addresses between 192.168.0.2 and 192.168.0.254. This is connected to a Fritzbox 7270 (popular in Germany where I live) with IP address of 192.168.178.1. This also has DHCP enabled passing out addresses between 192.168.178.20 and 192.168.178.200. The only reason I am not plugging the ATV into the Fritzbox, which is the logical solution, is that my FB resets itself from time to time causing the ATV to die mid-programme. I have established that the internet is still active by plugging the ATV directly into one of the LAN ports of the cable modem, and then it continues to work fine while I have to reset (unplugging power cable) the FB. This setup works fine, but now I cannot Airplay from any of my iOS devices (all wirelessly connected to the FB) to the ATV, it just doesn't show up. I presume that this is because the ATV is now plugged into the cable modem and is effectively on a separate subnet?

Is there a clever way of resolving this problem, but leaving the ATV directly plugged into the cable modem? Can one adjust the IP addresses to somehow cause the modem and FB to be on the same network?

Any imparted wisdom will make me and my little boy very happy!

Welcome to the Apple Community.

What is the purpose of this additional box, can you simply not get rid of it, it's clearly the source of your problem, it's creating a second network and the devices that are trying to communicate using AirPlay are on different networks.

Hi Winston, unfortunately not. This modem is what is proving the connection to the internet, and was provided by the ISP. I'm essentially using the Fritzbox as a router, and it handles the phone line (also provided via the cable modem) too. One option would be to replace it with a newer (more reliable) model, I guess, but I wanted to try and sort out this problem in the mean while. Thanks, Pieter

The modem is only that, a modem, and has no wifi capability, which is why I'm using the FB for wireless connection. The FB, on the other hand, cannot interpret the incoming cable signal, so I do need both. Do you know of a way to resolve my problem?

My issue is I don't really know what a Fritzbox is, however it sounds just like a branded modem/router/base station.

Most of these devices (indeed everyone I've come across) can be set up in bridge mode, i.e. to let the main router distribute addresses only.

It may be available under some other kind of nomenclature in the Fritzbox set up, but if your main router is the only device distributing addresses the Fritbox will simply pass the addresses to the receiving devices and that way a device (iPad, for example) connecting to the Fritzbox will be on the same network as a device (Apple TV, for example) connecting to the main router and should be able to talk to each other.

Another thought. I know one can set the cable modem to bridge mode. Would this give me the same functionality I'm looking for? Not sure how the IP address of the ATV would then be assigned though?

If your devices still receive access to the gateway, then I assume this should be OK

Looking at the manual for the 7270 it seems to be intended to connect to a DSL or ISDN line. Just curious how do you have it connected to the cable modem?

Also I see no way of setting it up in bridge mode.

Looks like this device is a lot more then you need for the way you seem to be using it. Why not just get a simple WiFi Access point instead? Or find out why this one is resetting itself so often. While it might be possible play around with the settings to accomplish what you are looking to do it will never be an entirely satisfactory solution.

Hi Frank, the Fritzbox is quite a powerful decide which can do a lot. Before I had cable internet, I connected it to DSL via the phone line. Now with cable internet, I need to plug it into the cable router provided by the ISP by plugging it into one of its four LAN ports. One has to use port 1 of the FB though, but this works fine. The cable modem (CM) also provides a phone line, which I plug into the FB using a custom cable I made up myself. All phone calls then go via the FB to my normal Siemens Gigaset cordless phone which plugs into the FB. The FB allows one to then screen and block numbers, connects all your iOS device to it so that you can answer a call from any one of them, etc. Pretty clever stuff, really. But yes, I probably don't use 30% of what it can do, and mine is an older model!. I have now turned off DHCP on the CM and will see whether this helps. I can put the CM in bridge mode, and will try this next if I still have problems. Keep you updated.
