Q: Cannot add cards back to apple pay after restoring.

I had all my cards on apple pay until yesterday. But yesterday I thought to restore my phone as new and since after doing that I can't add any cards back to the apple pay. When I enter all the information, It says verifying and then displays a message that says "Card could not be added. Please try again later or contact the card issuer for more information."

iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 8.1.2

I will have to stop at the store again. They set it up as new and it still won't take the card. They told me to call the bank which I have now three times.

Similar thing happened to me today. I went into the Genius Bar and figured they would swap my phone entirely, except they were able to repair the camera instead. So I elected for that. Except in preparation of a swap I turned off Apple Pay, Passcode etc. Then upon arriving back at home I tried to add my credit cards back. No luck. Same issue everyone else is having with adding them back.

I performed a hard reset to the phone (holding the home button and power button same time for about 10 sec)  and then force quitting the Pass Book app, and then attempting to add a card back I was able to get one of my Bank of America cards back on. No luck with any other cards following the same procedure. Going to keep trying. My thoughts are (and this is just a guess) is that it takes a bit of time to clear out the old card from the system before you can re-add it.

I am having the same problem. On my phone theres also a long delay before I'm even able to add a card, when I tap the option from the Settings app. Then when I finally do it takes a long time at the Verifying step but never shows me the terms before rejecting it. Very strange.

My phone had that exact delay when both trying to add or verify a card. Then it would say it couldn't add and to try again later or call my bank. That all went away after they swapped the phone out.

Has anyone who's had this problem by any chance tried just getting a new SIM card? I wonder if that would help anything. Is Apple Pay tied at all to the secure element on SIM cards?

Yes I have tried that with no luck. I have AT&T and I swapped it out with at T-Mobile sim with no luck. Still get the same cannot add card message and the setup takes about a minute or two to load and verify.

I ended up going to the Apple Store and going to the genius bar. They proceeded to do all the thing I already tried.

After they did a restore and set up as a new phone and saw they it didn't work they went in the back and brought out a new phone.

I Fired up the phone and went thru steps to add my cards to Apple pay and everything worked. So getting a new phone fixed the issue.

It has nothing to do with my bank, or possible corrupt backup.  I'm glad I didn't wait around and took matters into my own hands.

I Told them I don't have time for the back and forth just fix it.  I have Apple care just give me a new phone.   They replaced it and it didn't count

against my apple care.  What happens when you restore your phone and go to sell it or give it away.  The buyers are going to be extremely disappointed

Congratulations on your new "refurbished" phone that someone was using previously.  I personally don't want a phone someone was already using so I'll wait for Apple to fix the error on their server.

@bart: No it's not tied to the sim card. Apple pay server manages the verification process of our cards. So somehow it still thinks we already have that card on file because the last time we removed it, it wasn't completely removed from the Apple pay server. So just wait for them to release a software update to fix it.

I too am having this issue on my iPhone 6 Plus running 8.1.2, but this was caused not by a system restore, but simply by logging out of iCloud and logging in again. (I did this to remedy an issue with my calendars not syncing). Had I known that this would also remove my stored Apple Pay cards I probably would have tried another solution.

After logging back into my iCloud account (and also rebooting for good measure) I was unable to add any of my credit cards back to Apple Pay and would get the error "Could Not Add Card: Try again later or contact your card issuer for more information."

I just spoke to Bank of America's Apple Pay support team and they're stumped, since all my BofA cards are working fine and ready-to-go for Apple Pay (at least on their end). However, they informed me that they aren't able to really do anything unless the card is already added to Passbook, and pending authorization. This allows them to see it on their own system, but since iOS is preventing me from even adding the card, their hands are tied.

I even tried adding my Chase card and I still get the same error.

I really don't know what to do at this point, and I really don't want to have to go to the Apple store just to have them swap my iPhone out for a refurbished model.

Same issue as everyone else; except like the previous poster, I signed out of iCloud and back in with a different ID.  Cannot add any cards back now, and get the same exact error that was pictured.

Have an open case with Apple, but it doesn't look good that they're likely going to just replace the phone.  It sounds like a back end problem.

I have been working on this issue with Apple, AMEX, MasterCard, Chase and Barclays.  All say they have elevated it to their highest priority and their techs are working with Apple techs to solve the issue.  I also have a ticket with Apple and Zack who has been quite helpful has indicated he cannot replace my phone until Apple Engineers determine it's an issue with the phones.e

While on the phone with Barclays and AMEX they can see in real time when a card is added to be provisioned.  Nothing is happening on their end which tells me our phones are not communicating with Apple Servers.

This many page views over 1100 currently can't be wrong.  So if we can get the credit cards companies and all the banks to step up maybe we can get this solved.  Zack also said I am welcome to go to the Apple Store and they more than likely will swap out the phone, but why do I want somebody else's problem with a refurb.  Can I live without Apple Pay, sure I can, but I paid full price for my 6 plus and I purchased from Apple and not ATT, so I should have full functionality of my device.

I'll report back once I get resolution from any of the card issuers, Visa, MasterCard or AMEX and see how Apple responds.

I also have a ticket with Apple which has been escalated to Apple Engineers. I have been in contact with Apple for three weeks now, hopefully Apple Engineers will have something after the holiday break. I agree with you I don't want a refurb especially when I paid full price from Apple and have Apple Care.
