Deleting videos does not free up space?

I've got an iPhone 6 Plus (64GB), running iOS 8.1.2 (now) which was running 8.1.1 when I first ran into the following:

Settings > General > About showed "Available" space of 4.2GB. I had over 200 videos shot with the built-in Camera app, most of which were carried over when I upgraded from an iPhone 5 running iOS 8.1. After deleting over 200 of those videos, "Available" space showed 4.3GB.

I figure all that video, ranging from about :10 to several a few minutes long should have freed up a few gigs of data. It does not appear to have done so.

I have since power-cycled the phone, restarted and just last night upgraded to iOS 8.1.2. I'm still only seeing 4.2GB of "available" space.

Is there some kind of trick needed to get iOS 8 to recognize that I cleared up a lot of files from the device and to show the free space correctly?

Thanks in advance!

Have you emptied the "Recently Deleted Album"?

The videos may still be in the "Recently Deleted", so you can recover them.

Delete a photo or video from Photos. Tap the Photos tab, tap the photo or video, tap User uploaded file, then tap Delete Photo or Delete Video. Deleted photos and videos are kept in the Recently Deleted album on iPhone, with a badge showing the remaining days until the item is permanently removed from iPhone. To delete the photo or video permanently before the days expire, tap the item, tap Delete, then tap Delete Photo or Delete Video. If you use iCloud Photo Library beta, deleted photos and videos are permanently removed from all iOS 8.1 devices that use iCloud Photo Library beta with the same Apple ID.
