Option + v should place a check mark in Numbers as well as in Excel 2011

There is a whole list of check marks you can access in the menu item :

"Edit > Special Characters...":

You can also assign a Keyboard Text Substitution to place the Checkmark character into your document by using a series of normal keystrokes.

I have assigned the string "jj" to the ✓ character.
