Q: Issues swapping Apple ID with recovery email?

I am attempting to change my Apple ID to an email address that I formerly used as my recovery email.

  1. I changed my recovery email at appleid.apple.com/account/manage
  2. I then verified that email address following the provided instructions.
  3. When I attempt to change my Apple ID, I receive the dialog that my Apple ID and recovery email address may not be the same.

Has anyone else attempted the same sort of switch before? This seems to be the most logical way of going about it. Is there a propagation period, perhaps? The old recovery email should be completely out of their system at this point, making it available to assign as my Apple ID. Right?

Aside from the default @me.com account, there are no other email addresses specified in my account.

Answering my own question in case it helps anyone else.  I misunderstood and didn't realize that the "alternate emails" listed in the "emails" section of the apple id website are different from "rescue" email address listed in the "security" section of the apple id website.  If you find yourself in this position, you have to go into the security section and edit the email address that is clearly listed as the "rescue email."  This is on the same page as where you can change your security questions and date of birth.

    Happy New Year!
