Dec 15, 2014 9:52 AM in response to mgee1973by Old Toad,First how is the EHD formatted?
Next, what is the size of the file you're trying to open and play?
Does it have a small arrow in the lower left hand corner of its icon?
If it does then it's an alias of the original movie file.
Do you have a backup of your boot drive from before you moved the movie to the EHD? Recover the original movie from it.
If you don't have a backup you can use to recover the movie you'll have to use a file recovery application like SubrosaSoft FileSalvage to see if you can recover the movies. You can run it in demo mode to see if it can find the movies and recover them before you have to purchase it. Use the hard drive as little as possible to avoid overwriting the files on the HD.

Dec 15, 2014 11:04 AM in response to Old Toadby mgee1973,Hi Old toad
It's just took me a bit to figure out what EHD meant ,as I said I am a total newbie.Ok answers to your questions :-
1, The EHD is Formatted mac os extended (journaled)
2, The file sizes vary from 950mb to 3gb
3, The is no arrow in the left hand corner of any of the movie (is the image the thumbnail?)
4, What is the boot drive ? I do use time machine if this helps ?
One more question If I use time machine to go back before I created the movie will I lose everything i have since then ?
Thanks for your help

Dec 15, 2014 11:17 AM in response to mgee1973by Old Toad,2, The file sizes vary from 950mb to 3gb
These looks like the correct size for video files. The lack of an arrow tells us they are not alias files.
The boot drive is your internal drive.
One more question If I use time machine to go back before I created the movie will I lose everything i have since then ?
No. Use TM to restore only those movie files. Once you get a movie file back on your boot drive check it to make sure it will play OK. Then copy it to the EHD and try opening from there. If it opens OK delete the one from the boot drive.

Dec 15, 2014 11:19 AM in response to mgee1973by mgee1973,Hi again
If it helps when I highlight the file on the EHD then go to info then where it says /Volumes/Archives/Camcorder Movies and the name and extension says Cornwall 2013.dvdproj.It also say created 17th September 2013 13:12 and modified 13th December 2014 20:11.
When I go into my time capsule I can go back to 1 september 2014 or 13th may 2014.
What I don't understand is if I restore the computer back to these dates do I lose everything I have done since then ?
Also if I have created DVD's of my movies will I be able to use these dvd''s to copy back onto my MBP to make other copies or back up ?
Sorry for all these questions .

Dec 15, 2014 11:21 AM in response to mgee1973by schaafsmaster,I don't think Old Toad was suggesting to restore the entire computer. Time Machine allows you to restore individual files if need be. Look at these links and see if these help you out:

Dec 15, 2014 12:19 PM in response to mgee1973by Old Toad, schaatsmaster is right. I'm only suggesting you restore selected movie files, not the entire hard drive. Go to the folder where the movies were located originally, enter Time Machine, go back in time till you find the most recent copy of the movie file(s), select them and click on the Restore button. They will be restored to the folder you started in.

Dec 15, 2014 12:21 PM in response to schaafsmasterby mgee1973,Hi both of you,
I think it has worked I have found the files in time machine under iMovie events and restored that ,so all I have to do now is create the project again. Once I have moved the clips into iMovie projects ,then shared with media ,then open in idvd and create a new project ,can I then burn a new disk ?
Then what should I do with the file created in documents ? Drag and drop it to my EHD ?Then can I delete it from iMovie events and my documents?
Thanks you both so much for your help it really has restored my faith in OSX
