Without the backup passcode the only option is to restore the phone and set it up as New. You get unlimited guesses for the passcode, so you might try a bunch of passcodes that you have used in the past. And to speed up the process just uncheck "encrypt backup" in iTunes and you will be prompted immediately for the passcode.

Elcomsoft makes an iPhone backup password cracker that will work if you are not in the habit of using strong passwords. It is targeted for law enforcement use, and priced accordingly. However, they have a trial version that will give you the first 2 characters.

You mean your iTunes backup encrypted password?  If so, there's nowhere to recover it.  You have to remember what you used in the past.  Alternatively, you can delete that backup from iTunes and create a new backup the same device, but choose not to enable the 'Encrypt backup' option in iTunes.

Hi, Yes there is a way to get the backup back if you forgot your password. Type in your apple ID password with NO CAPS, even if the ID password had caps. If you use caps it won't work. Type it in when it asks you for the encryption password and it will work. I didn't believe it either until I did it and it worked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi everyone, i had the same issue and i have tried almost every password that i would ever used in my whole life. However, I have found the perfect solution for any MAC user to know what is the password, just follow the steps:

    1. Go to Finder/Applications/Utilities/KeyChainAccess.

    2. On the top right of the window Write iPhone.

    3. in the search result look for "iPhone Backup"

    4. Click on Show Password, Enter your Mac password

    5. you will get your iTunes backup Password

Enjoy everyone, i hope that i could help as much as i can.

That will work IF you saved the backup password in your keychain when you created it. There's a checkbox to do that on the password entry screen. If you didn't check it the password will not be in the keychain.

Alternatively, since there is an unlimited number of tries you may want to go through all your password combinations.

I did this and found a password from 3 updates ago worked.

It appears the apple password used at the time of the first backup is the one.

Good luck, and btw, the 1234 or 0000 does not work as described in earlier posts.

Yes, the first password used after Encrypt was checked will be the one, because it isn't really a password, it's an encryption key. If you change it (which you can) it creates a new backup with the new password as the encryption key. 1234 and 0000 only work if that's what you entered the first time iTunes prompted for a password.
