Syncing POP3 mailbox

How do I get my Mac running Yosemite and my iPad to sync POP3 mail? My Android phone does it automatically but I can't figure out how to make Apple products do it. Anyone know how?

MacBook Air, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1), also IOS products

I have an account at Pipeline (one of the two original consumer online companies from the late 80's/early 90's now owned by Earthlink). On my Android phone, when I delete an email from the inbox on my Mac or my iPad, it is automatically deleted from the phone. I would like the Mac and the iPad to automatically trash an email that I delete on any of my two Apple devices or my phone to delete on all of the devices. Similarly, if I send from the phone I would like it to sync. The Pipeline account is, in fact, a POP3 account. I hear what you are saying but I can't figure out how Android is able to do it and the Apple devices don't.

I am wondering if maybe when the Android goes to fetch the mail (through the same port etc), it syncs to what the whole CURRENT mailbox is. If so, I am wondering if there is a way to do that on Apple...although when I try just using the "synchronize" tab it still doesn't delete the emails that were deleted on another device. CSound1, I don't think it is an ISP issue as Android does it and I didn't have to do any work arounds automatically so I think it must be an Apple OS situation. But happy to be wrong. I am just befuddled...and frustrated having to constantly delete bunches of emails on multiple Apple devices.

I find this very fascinating, since POP mail cannot sync. When mail is fetched in a POP account, it is downloaded from the server to the local device. I wonder if the mail account is being handled by a 3rd party service with the Android. When setting up the mail on the Android device, do you enter the mail server settings directly? Or is it possible it is doing this through your gmail Google account?

It is setup the same way (to the user) where you go to accounts, add an account, put in the server and port. I don't know if they then (hidden from the user) do it through gmail somehow (although I doubt that) but it isn't through my gmail account since I don't have one. It is absolutely befuddling.

What are the settings, server and ports

I did find this, which refers to using a Gmail account in order to emulate IMAP with a Pipeline POP account.

Yes, a lot of the smaller educational institutions are starting to look at Gmail and other solutions, instead of their own email servers. I still feel this is similar to what Blackberry does with their mail, since the accounts go through their servers instead of direct as they do with iOS. Once mail is picked up by the client, it is marked so the client doesn't pick it up again, even if left on the server. I'm betting their is some middleman on this.

That is interesting. What is interesting also is that the phone asked if it was IMAP or POP and in setting it up I picked POP, put in the server name and port and I guess it knew to do what the link you posted suggests. In fact, when I look at the advanced settings after it says it is a POP3 account. So, the user experience is easy. Going to try re-setting up the accounts on the Apple devices as described in wiki link and see if that does it. Thanks!
