iMac 24 inch Late 2006 VERY SLOW!!!

My iMac 24 inch Late 2006 running OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63) is very slow at times. A reboot helps but after a few hours of web browsing and it starts to crawl. Crawl as in clicks don't get a response till 10-20 seconds later. I'm unable to edit any movies in iMovie cause it's just so painfully slow. iMovie can barely load everything up let alone start editing. I haven't tried iMovie in several months because of it. Is there a way to check for viruses on macs? Is there such a thing as a virus on macs? or is there a way to check what the heck is slowing it down? tips and suggestions are gladly welcome. thanks

Basically, what it comes down to is that your IMac is starved for RAM, but your iMac model is maxed out at its recommended 3 GBs of RAM.

All newer versions of OS X (10.7 and later) really need a "real world working" minimum of 4 GBa of. RAM or more.

The amount of RAM in your 2006 IMac is barely sufficient.

Technically, you could replace the 1 GB RAM module inside of your IMac with a 2 GB RAM module, instead.

Having matching pairs of RAM helps a little with performance, but the 2006 IMac is not capable of using or reading the full 4 Gbs of RAM installed.

Your iMac year and model will only read between 3.2-3.5 GBs of the total 4 GBs If you installed that replacement 2 GB RAM module.

So, I am not sure if it is worth spending $32 or so U.S.D, on the 2 GB module for your iMac.

You would see some performance gain from it and the RAM modules is not expensive to perhaps consider purchasing and installing it into your iMac.

Correct, compatible and reliable Mac RAM can ONLY be purchased from online RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).

Here re is the correct Ram modules you need from OWC.

And how to install it.

Good Luck!

I'm not convinced its the RAM (although that will certainly be slowing things to some extent), why would it be OK after reboot and slow down from web browsing?

Which version of iMovie are you running?

Have you run Activity Monitor when its in its slow mode? (In the Utilities folder, which is in the Applications folder). Get it to show "All processes" and see if there's something hogging the CPU.

Next time it gets slow, I'll run the Activity Monitor. Right now, after a reboot before starting this thread, its still running ok with mail and safari. I dare not to run anything else cause it'll start dragging slower than a corps.

iMovie has been trying to load now for about 3 min….once it loads, I'll post the version.
