Apple TV won't wake up for AirPlay request

Apple TV repeatedly won't appear in AirPlay menus on phones, iPads or iMacs. Only on restart can I get it to appear. It then works normally until the ATV goes to sleep again. What can be done?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.3)

Just to post the scorecard we have on serial numbers (4th & 5th digits) so far:

JD, JF showing this behavior.

HK, JJ, KF not showing this behavior.

Based on the serial numbers I can assume that neither of your units is under support anymore. At a minimum, I'd suggest both of you reporting what you see in detail to http://www.apple.com/feedback/.

Aldur, if I'm interpreting your picture correctly, the ATV is wired, right?

May 20, 2015 11:14 AM in response to jjkraw

Yes it is wired. Did many tests yesterday also wireless and directly wired to router instead of the switch. Same behaviour...

Don't know if this is of interest. I've just checked the port statistics for the ATV after it disappeared:

User uploaded file

It is still sending broadcast and multicast packets, the numbers keep growing, but it receives no answer. No clue if this means something

Great job in being so thorough when documenting your tests. This is very valuable input.

My feeling at this point (from what we have seen so far) is that ATVs with 4th and 5th digit of the serial in the JD through JF range should have been part of the recall. I've got a new Apple TV ordered and on the way. When it gets here, I'll see what that one does. If it works the way it is supposed to, then I guess we will have our answer.

I would not go so far to say that it is certainly not any malfunction of the hardware. It does not surprise me that downgrading the firmware fixes the problem, as my Apple TV used to work fine before the version 7 firmware came out. But on some ATV units, maybe even most, the firmware downgrade is not necessary. Those ATVs behave properly when sleeping regardless of the firmware version.

This may seem unlikely, but it is possible that the newer firmware is incompatible with some specific hardware revisions. When Apple first "broke" this, and my Apple TV stopped responding properly when in sleep mode, I was sure that a new version of the firmware would come out and "fix" what they broke. But that never happened. The reason why I think that never happened is possibly because not all ATV hardware was affected in the same way by the new firmware.

My new ATV arrives tomorrow. I am anxious to see how it behaves.

As for jjkraw's link to the new features that support the ability to stream content from an Apple device to Apple TV even if the devices are on different networks, that may certainly have something to do with this. But - I have tried all different combinations of blue tooth on/off on Apple TV and other iOS devices, and it seems to make no difference. I have seen some users report that bluetooth enabled does make a difference in the availability of Apple TV in the airplay list on iOS devices, but for me, it does not.

Well, so much for my hypothesis that the newer ATV firmware was incompatible with specific hardware revisions!

I just got a new ATV and connected it to my network. I did minimal configuration. (Connected via WiFi). Here's how it came setup:

Model: A1469

4th and 5th digits of serial number: PD

ATV Software: 7.0.3 (6917)

I started pinging the ATV. So far, so good. Then I put the ATV in sleep, and the pings stopped within 15 seconds! Also, ATV does not show up anymore in Airplay listing on iOS devices.

I went ahead and reset the new ATV to factory default and let it do all the updates. It is now running software version 7.2 (7512).

Same problem! When I put the ATV to sleep, pings stop within 15-20 seconds, and ATV is no longer listed in Airplay on iOS devices (iPod, iPod touch, iPhone, etc.)

Perhaps we should start keeping a tally of which users have Apple routers and which do not? My next hypothesis is that it is either something to do with the router settings, or the router itself does not support something that Apple is doing. Knowing Apple, it kind of makes sense that they expect you to buy all Apple stuff for your network too.

The other thing I noticed is that my ATV seems to be popping in and out of the bonjour device list ever 30 minutes. Note that even when it is on the list using the dns-sd -B _raop._tcp command, it is NOT pingable. It does pop in and out of the airplay list on iOS devices, and in iTunes. If I try to connect to it when it shows up in the airplay list on the iOS device or iTunes, it FAILS to connect. (Timeout.) This is the NEW Apple TV that I just bought, but my old one does this on my network as well. I played around with a bunch of settings on my linksys router yesterday, but none of the router changes made any difference.

It finally occurred to me that I could replicate a setup without my Apple TC by creating a guest network on my ASUS RT-AC66U. Here is what I did:

1) Created the guest network (2.4GHz).

2) Verified that I am receiving no Bonjour advertisements or any other traffic from my home network on the guest network. I took three approaches to this: the dns-sd command on the MacBook, the mDNS Watch app on my iPhone, and finally Wireshark on the Mac to actually look at the traffic. It was all clean and just what I expected: No packets except from devices connected to the guest network.

3) Connected one Apple TV to the guest network. I restarted it after the connection. At that point I was seeing Bonjour advertisements for _airplay, _raop, _touch-able (iOS remote app), and _appletv-v2 (Home Sharing).

Now, the "bad" news... I still don't have any problems reaching the ATV if I put another device on the guest network. I can mirror my iPhone. I can ping. I can see the Bonjour advertisements.

dreohio99: Since you have an ASUS router, could you look at System Log -> Wireless Log when the ATV goes into deep sleep? See if the ATV's MAC address appears in the Stations List for the corresponding SSID and, if so, see what is says in the PSM (power save mode) column. Thanks.
