    Hi everyone and Dr. Smoke,

Same for me herem, since from the date of my 1st post here till today, in fact just a while ago, I am still getting the same error message, surely the Symantec servers are not time-outing on me for so long??

And yes, I am also "stuck" while trying to download new Virus Def from the support page, the Safari colorwheel just keep spinning... have to force quit. It also has been going on since this Discussion reported about it by another poster; MacFixIt is also reporting the same problem.

So, will trashing the entire NAV and re-installing help?

    Thanks and cheers

For what it is worth, I just ran Live Update and it updated the virus definitions to 10/08/2006. When it first started the Live Update window said "Received 0k of 598.5k" or something like that with the rotating candy cane indicator bar. After a few minutes that changed to "Received 598.5k of 598.5k" and "Processing..." After a few more minutes the virus definitions were successfully updated.

Sacaape, its worth a lot to me cause I tried it again immediately after reading your email and it worked. YEA!!!!!

I was not looking forward to complete uninstall process and then then reinstall.

Guess I will repair permissions and begin my 10.4.8 inload and install.

Thanks for posting, as Im not sure I would have tried again with out your message.

P.S. I cannot keep manually downloading the virus update def forever right...?

No, unfortunately mine still doesn't work, same
    error message

Hoho, I usallly transcieve at 48000 or 46000 bps( bauds per second ) however, yesterday when live update worked for me my connection speed was only 28000. I rarely have that slow of a connection anymore.

As for manual update of def., I dont see any reason why you cant cotiue to to that as long as stay current with your subscribtion.

I know what you mean, but then that will defeat all purpose of using the Scheduler to make the Live Update automated.

    Thanks and cheers

You might want to try again since the virus definition update that was released today. I was successful again and now have the virus definitions dated 10/13/2006.

    Nope, unsuccessful

Still giving me the same error updating message.

The thing I said before, I cannot keep on going like this manually downloading the virus def and updating.

A few days ago I just download the virus def update dated 11 Oct or something? Now the latest update is out, I have at least 4 macs to update, not very efficient way of working.

I feel like re-installing the entire NAV, but just afraid then if the update totally fails, then I will have an older version of NAV, and if I am not wrong, I need to update NAV especially for Intel macs 'cause only the newer updated versions are Universal.

If you are still having trouble, why don't you break down and do a complete system reinstall so you have a clean system to work with? There's obviously nothing wrong with the Live Update servers.

Ok, silly stupid me thinking that if I re-install NAV I can get the Live Update working again... but NOooooo...

Now I am down with earlier older versions of Norton Anti-virus, Live Update and the Virus Def... and I can't update any of them via Live Update

And what is another blow is a check at Symantec's site and they do not provide any updates via downloads, and require you to run Live Update...

If I still can't get this to work I would probably delete every trace of NAV and work and "live" like what the Macs are out proclaim to be - virus free.

P.S. when you said a complete clean system re-install you mean with the macs and the OS, and not just re-installing NAV?? I find it hard to believe that all my 3 macs at home, a PB, my iMac and my sis's Intel Mac mini all exhibit the same error message problem, I do not believe all 3 have "unclean" system to begin with, moreover I keep and maintain all of them very well, beside this update problem, none of the macs exhibit any other weird problems, not even after every OS updates.

Howho, I just inloaded NAV def. for the 2nd week in row now with no problem.
Seems that there was two weeks of some problems here there for some users.

Now it appears you are the only one on planet( ) who is still not getting the inloads. This time mey bps inload speed was 46000 so all is back to normal for me. Wush I had some helpful advice for you but Im baffled by your problem.

Keep trying at differrent times of day would be my next guess. Good Luck!

Yeap, I think I am getting that feeling that I am the "only one" in the world who keeps getting the error message updating... at least from my home. I have no problems at work...

This make me wonder for a few days now could my cable modem connection & my home AirPort network may have an effect on this update?

    Hello howwow,

It looks like that you are at the beginning of the ‘Norton cycle,’ which I have just concluded. I have had the identical experiences like yours, where LiveUpdate WILL NOT update. Norton also had the same advice of reinstalling Java 1.4.2, and I had the same result as you: Apple said not a version where this is necessary. Anyhow, just to humour Norton, I actually removed the Java 1.4.2 folder (you’ll find it in ~/System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions), thinking that if the installer can’t find it where it belongs, it WILL install a new version. No dice, same result. (Don’t throw the Java 1.4.2 folder into the trash, just remove from the system, you’ll need the admin password. You may just want to put it back after this experiment.) Norton also keeps referring to MacOS X 10.3 all the time. Just a few sites refer to 10.4...

The end result with Norton has been that the issue has been unresolved. There have been seven e-mails between Norton and me with various suggestions, none have worked (Oct 7 to 18). In the meantime, I have renewed my subscription, and I have asked Norton to refund me the money. They no longer answer my e-mails. I am convinced that their LiveUpdate is in conflict with something, or buggy. My wife has the exact set-up on her machine, but fewer ‘add-ins’ (You Control, SpellCatcher, etc) and LiveUpate works.

I have now thrown out Norton Anti virus, and use ClamXav. I may also purchase Allume Virus Barrier.

Reviews for NAVM have not been very good anyhow, because of their problems with LiveUpdate. - Small consolation, it doesn’t work very well in the Windows world either. Mention Norton in the Windows world, and they throw their hands up!

    Good luck.

Keep me posted, should you be able to get it going, and tell me what you did.

    Cheers,

    Klaus

You are right, the virus issues for Macs are negligible. However, we live in a ‘Windows’ world, and Windows docs carry viri (Latin plural of virus). They won’t affect Macs, but Macs are perfectly capable of passing them on. Time and again I have been working on Windows docs, sent them back to the originator, only to be informed that they were ‘infected.’

Ergo, Mac virus programs actually mostly catch Windows viri, before you have a chance to pass them on to your Windows friends...

    Cheers,

    Klaus
