How to minimize Mail on startup

Mail is one of my applications that I have included in my login items. I want Mail to open automatically when I start up the computer but I don't want Mail window to open so I checked the "hide" box so that Mail will stay minimized. But Mail opens fully maximized even with the "hide" box checked.

I have the latest version of Yosemite.

I'm going to ask you to do both things below:

1/ go to "apple menu > system preferences > users and groups" Click to tab [login]

Make sure the box is checked next to "Mail"

2/ Secondly, open the Finder and find the "go" menu in the top left corner of your computer display (not the Finder-window)

Click "go > go to folder" and copy-paste the following path into the field that appears (don't neglect the ~)

~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Saved Application State/

Click the [go]-button and you will find yourself in a somewhat technical-looking Finder-folder. Locate the folder [com.apple.mail.savedState] and trash it. This will not delete mails or mail settings, so don't worry.

Restart your Mac. Issue solved?

this solved my problem with the mail application opening as well. even marked as hidden, it would still open up fully on after a restart. your solution solved this, although now my messages app opens up lol.

EDIT: this must have been a fluke with the messages app. I restarted and shutdown a couple times, and the messages app no longer opens on startup! thanks again.
