Q: HELP! Cannot Sign Into iCloud - Apple ID is valid but is not an iCloud account.

Opened Apple account today at bosses' request so he can send me his calendar. When I attempted to log into iCloud I received this message: "Cannot Sign In - Apple ID is valid but is not an iCloud account". I cannot get past step one in the instructions. iCloud is loaded into my windows 8.1 machine, but I cannot get in to set up any preferences as the instructions suggest. Also, when I attempt to log in to his invite to view his calendar sent via Outlook - I am also blocked with this message: "Set up iCloud on a device to use iCloud.com. Your Apple ID must be used to set up iCloud on an iOS or OS X device before you can use iCloud.com."

What happened to - you can set this up on a Windows machine or access the web based iCloud calendar whether you have an Apple device or not?

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

From your post I understand that you have created an Apple ID to use with iCloud, but are getting an error that it's not an iCloud account when signing in. As the other error states, to create an iCloud account, you must set up iCloud on an iOS device or a Mac before being able to use the iCloud service.

How do I sign up for iCloud?
You can sign up for iCloud on an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch with iOS 5 or later, or through System Preferences on a Mac with OS X Lion v10.7.4 or later. Just follow the setup instructions for your iOS deviceor Mac.
You may need to verify the email address that you use for your Apple ID. See Frequently Asked Questions About Apple ID for more information.
