problem with drive letter assignment and ipod update

recently when i connected my ipod to my computer, it did not automatically start itunes and the update process. i tested it with other computers and it worked. after internet research, i found out that windows was not assigning it a drive letter. i assigned it a drive letter, I: through the disk management menu which was successful. but when i started itunes again it started the update process and within 2-5 seconds it lost the drive letter. i opened the disk management menu again but this time the drive i had assigned to was not available.
i have tested different slots and different USB devices. it looks like i have a problem with only USB disk drive type devices like ipod, digital camera, SD card reader, CF card reader, thumb drive etc.
please advise.
thanks.

Hi sbimal!

If your iPod is losing its drive letter, then Windows is probably still confusing it with other USB devices (their letters may need to be changed).

First, try this:

1 - Eject and disconnect your iPod.
2 - Disconnect all the other USB dervices that are currently connected to your computer.
3 - Restart your computer
4 - Reset your iPod (hold the Menu and Select buttons together for 7 seconds).
5 - Open "Computer Management" window again to get ready to assign your iPod a different letter.
6 - With the computer fully started up, and all other users logged off, connect your iPod again.
7 - Procees to assign your iPod a different drive letter again (try something different, like "Z").

If this technique works, and iTunes automatically syncs to your iPod without losing the drive letter, then try disconnecting your iPod, connecting one device, resetting your iPod, and connecting the iPod to your computer again. ccontinue this to try to track down if one of the USB devices seems to have interference problems with your iPod's drive letter.

If you can find a corrilation with one of the USB devices, try to assign it a different drive letter you've never tried (with your iPod DISCONNECTED), like "N".

I hope this helps you!
