Q: Final Cut Pro X running EXTREMELY slow.

Ever since I updated to OSX Yosemite FCPX has been running EXTREMELY slow. Things like importing and exporting media works okay but when it comes to media analysis and standard workflow it is unusable. Before the update I could drag into a new project 3+ hours of footage, add my effects, color corrections, transitions etc. and work right through the background rendering with no problem. It would keep up fine and I never had to wait for it to catch up. Then I wold cut it up with the blade tool, do a final render and export with no issues. Now I have to wait multiple hours for the rendering and can't use background rendering. If I don't leave it alone and let it render with every minor edit I do it will take literal days to edit footage. I had to leave it over night with a 1 hour long project. Doing minor color correction and hue/saturation adjustment on a 20 minute video of GoPro footage took just under three and a half hours yesterday. I neverhad issues like this before Yosemite. If anyone could please help I would greatly appreciate it as this is severely effecting my video output.

I am using a late 2012 model MacBook Pro. 2.5 GHz Core i5, upgraded to 16GB of RAM with FCPX 10.0.4. Honestly the whole machine has noticeably slowed down since the update to Yosemite.

It sounds as though your Mac could do with a "spring-clean".

Is the hard -drive nearly full?  The internal system drive ideally should be no more than 50% full and any externals no more than 80%.

If they are, trash unnecessary large files.

Open Disk Utility and Repair Disk Permissions.

I suppose you mean 10.1.4 - if you are *really* using 10.0.4 you need to update.

My machine has a 500Gb hard drive with 386gb of free space.  I keep the majority of my files on an external hard drive. I also use clean my Mac on a regular basis to keep it clean.

Using an external drive is recommended, but that too should have a decent percentage of free space (>=20%). And it should be a fast drive - if it is connected via USB2 it may be a bottleneck.

These "cleaning" utilities can sometimes do more harm than good.

While the one you mention seems like a genuine application (as opposed to ones often publicized which I classify as malware), I wonder if you may not inadvertently deleted something that you shouldn't.

It could be worth to run this free utility Etrecheck to se if you have something unusual on your system http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck I have been on Yosemite forum and this seems to be the first the gurus there recommend if something is behaving abnormally . Also this software http://www.adwaremedic.com/index.php which detects possible adwares. Notorious software like Clean my Mac, virus softwares and all those optimize and cleaning softwares should be removed according to them. Proplems with FCPX can be caused by other factors than the software it self, for example corrupted directory, malware and adwares.

Just to reinforce what Luis said about these third party cleaning apps. In particular, they often seem to contribute to issues with pro apps.

A couple of "housecleaning" steps that can be done quickly.

Start up your system in Safe Mode by holding shift key when starting up.

    Reset NVRAM

Create a brand new account and  run FCP X and other slow apps from that account as a test.

My External is a 2TB and has over 1TB of free space. That is good advice I am going to look into the reputability of my cleaner app. I read a bunch of reviews on it before I downloaded it and it seemed to be the only one people really recommended. It isn't one of those programs you see plastered all over websites with a lot of advertisements on them.

Thank you for your reply and your help.

Thank you everyone for the quick replies and great advice. I will do everything recommended and post up my results. From what I have read, these machines running sluggish after updating to Yosemite seems to be a common thing along with severely decreased battery life which I am also definitely experiencing. Hopefully these solutions will help with FCP and normal operation.

Always remove any "clean up" software. It can only help. Then see how it runs afterwards and, if necessary revisit your problem.

Note: to uninstall software, always use vendor-provided uninstallers or uninstallation instructions. Never attempt to manually delete files. That can go very wrong.

It is not reasonable to expect a Mac to operate normally after using CleanMyMac. Like many ill-conceived "cleaning" utilities, it is capable of corrupting a Mac to the point that erasing it completely is the only practicable means of recovery. CleanMyMac is not the only example; it is merely popular due to marketing strategies that are as effective as they are intrusive.

There is no practicable way to reverse the effects of having used CleanMyMac2 other than to reinstall all affected files from backups or their original sources. Its developer's uninstallation instructions are ineffective despite their recent claims to the contrary. Only MacPaw, its developer, can know the reason for that, but I can think of two possibilities: either they are purposefully leaving components behind for reasons known only to them, or they simply don't know what they're doing. Neither one of those possibilities is particularly comforting for the user.

Reinstalling OS X alone will have no effect on either removing CleanMyMac or reversing the damage it is capable of inflicting upon a system.

Follow the applicable recovery procedure below:

    • If you have a backup that you created prior to using CleanMyMac, now is the time to use it. For Time Machine, boot OS X Recovery, and at the Mac OS X Utilities screen, choose Restore from Time Machine Backup. Choose a date preceding the installation of CleanMyMac.
    • If you do not have a backup that predates the use of CleanMyMac, create one now. To do that read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac.
      • The recovery procedure will require that you erase the Mac using OS X Recovery, and then create a new user whose contents will be empty. You will then be able to use Setup Assistant to migrate your essential documents including photos, music, work products and other essential files.
      • When doing so, select only your previous User account and do not select "Applications", "Computer and Network Settings" or "Other files and folders". De-select those choices.
      • Subsequent to using Setup Assistant, you will need to reinstall the essential software you may require, once again remembering to install software only from their original sources, and omitting all non-essential software.

To erase and install Yosemite read: OS X Yosemite: Erase and reinstall OS X

To migrate your essential documents read: OS X Yosemite: Transfer your info from a computer or storage device and follow the procedure under Transfer info from a Time Machine backup or other storage device.
