Q: Disk Utility unable to partition as FAT32

Hello,

I am trying to set up bootcamp on my Late 2013 13" MBP running Yosemite 10.10.1 (14B25). I went and purchased a 16GB flash drive and directly followed the instructions laid out here. I have a family copy (3 activation codes) of Windows 7 Home Premium. I used the 64bit. After formatting my USB to FAT32, and mounting the W7 ISO, I followed and completed all instructions listed above

Upon rebooting into windows, I selected my partition labeled "BOOTCAMP" and tried to continue. I was prompted with "Setup was unable to create a new system partition or locate an existing system partition.  See the Setup log files for more information." from the Windows installer. After coming across this thread, I removed anything plugged in (outside of the USB w/ W7 ISO) and tried again. No luck. Lastly, I tried moving the USB from the left to the right, no luck. I then tried to reformat the USB ISO as prompted by the Installer, and that didn't work. (I assume this would have wiped the drive - probably a dumb idea)

I restarted and booted into OSX. I assumed that my best bet would be to restart everything and try again. I removed the partition from my Microsoft HD, and went to erase my USB drive. Upon trying to reformat it as I had before, I realized there is no option for FAT32 in Disk Utility. I have attached an image of this. I am not sure what happened here. I have reformatted the drive by Erasing and Partitioning it multiple different times. Still not option for FAT32. I have been sure to have selected Master Boot Record.

I assume I now can't try again until I am able to reformat the USB into FAT32 so I can again mount my ISO and go from there.

Any guidance? What are my options here?

Here is a little bit more information for you to update yourself on the use of Disk Utility. It is an Apple Support Document.

Yes, that is how I am selecting which OS to boot into. However as I had said, there is only one option (see picture in previous post). I have already used Disk Utility to remove the windows partition. When I open in Disk Utility or Bootcamp assistant, it shows that there is no partition anymore. Simply one Macintosh HD drive. However, when I turn on the computer after completely shutting off, it turns on, stays blank black screen for 30 seconds and then shows the "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key" screen. Which as I described above, I can't do anything from there. I believe that this "No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key" screen is part of Windows... however that doesn't make any sense as it doesn't show up that I have that partition anywhere.

I instead opened Disk Utility, and removed the Windows partition from there. I now shut off the computer, and rebooted (...) it boots into a screen looking like this after 30 seconds: Note no keys at all were responsive on this screen and I had to hold the power down to reboot.

Did you create yourself a backup of your data as i suggested in my previous post? Now you know the reason and why is so important to have one.

Is your USB Memory Stick still connected to your Mac? If yes, then shutdown your mac, disconnect USB Memory Stick and try to reset PRAM: OS X Yosemite: Reset your computer’s PRAM

Have been messing with trying to format a USB Flash drive with Mac Hard Disk Utilities

Have tried both MSDOS and the exFAT ... Master boot record and everything else ... trying to get to a FAT32

In all cases, the USB flash drive shows up with a Format of PrlSF when I'm in Windows 10 ... but, on Mac it shows exFAT or the other

And the ability to format the drive is dimmed out in Windows 10, and I'm using Parallels 11

I also have a 3T LaCie using Thunderbolt ... both the Flash drive and the 3T are showing up on Windows and Mac

Ca't use the "drives" in Windows to reformat to FAT32 and from what I'm seeing now

The Hard Disk Utility is NOT FORMTING the disk into a true FAT32 .... as Windows is seeing it as a PrlSF

Which would indicate the only way to format a "disk" into a FAT32, means using a PC

Trying to set up an external HDD for a PS3, and need to down load Multiman while using the Web Browser in PS3 to a USB drive, which is formatted in FAT32

Any thoughts and/or suggestions would be appreciated ... I don't have any working PC's around anymore
