Why can't my mail connect to hotmail

Hi all i just got a macbook pro my first time getting an apple device i was expecting the set up to be easy knowing apple but for some reason my mail won't connect to my hotmail account (@msn.com) i get an error when opening the app which says " Mail can't connect to the account "msn" - enter the password " i have gone into preferences and accounts and checked my email address and password they are both correct i don't understand why it isn't working, can anyone help? Cheers

Go to general settings, internet accounts and delete your current hotmail account. After that, just create a new hotmail account and enter you credentials as usual. It should give you the option to select what you want to sync: mail and notes.
