Q: How to set a custom ringtone for messages

I'm using a handoff on my Mac, iPad, and iPhone. My Mac does not have to same ring tone as my iPad and iPhone. I have a custom ring tone that I made for my iPod and iPhone, as well as all the original files that I used to make it. Is there anyway to set this custom ring tone as the messages sound on my Mac?

I have the original sound files in MP4 format, and can create wave files from them as well. I also have the ring tone files made in GarageBand.

My Mac is running Mac OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.1

Thanks in advance for your help.

whoops. Product info listed on the MacBook Pro is out of date on OS version. It is Yosemite 10.10.1 as stated in the question body.

    Hi,

It is not going to be easy if it can be managed in the Yosemite version at all.

As a note this is where the other sounds are kept

    Resources.png

In the Applications Folder right click the app and choose "Show Package Contents" then navigate through Contents to Resources.

The Messages Received item here is the one the App used to play.

In Yosemite the sounds are stored in

    /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/ToneLibrary.framework/Versions/A/Resources.

There is an Alerts Folder and a Ringtone folder in here

The files are .caf  sound files

This folder is on the System side of things and not in a place you can use to add a Alias to the ~/Library/Sounds folder.

I have tried adding non .caf files to this area and they don't appear in the list when viewed from the Messages > Preferences > General section.

It is a shame Apple have limited the app in this respect.

The easiest way now would be to create a AppleScript item to play sounds that were stored somewhere else.

You would probably need to Google that or ask in the Using Technologies Community about more details.

It's no longer possible to add custom tones using this method in "El Capitan".

    Hi,

Are we talking about the AppleScript method I suggested ?

There also appeared to be poor support fro AppleScript in Messages in Yosemite.
