Q: I cannot make Adobe Flash Player work.

MacBook Pro 10.6.8.

YouTube says i need to update Adobe Flash Player. I have tried everything I know how to do. When I do download from the Adobe page, I go through the three steps and it says it is downloaded in my download file, but when I try to open Youtube, it says I need to update again. I have done the restart steps, holding down keys; I have downloaded from the youtube and every other place I can find. I uninstalled Adobe Flash, it uninstalled, now I have nothing in the Finder, and when I download, it doesn't show in Finder (only in downloads file).

I now have install.flash palyer. osx.dmg

                      "      "        "      osx-l.dmg

                      "      "        "      osx-2.dmg

in downloads folder.

I also have an Adobe icon in finder sidebar under devices.

Am I suppose to do something after the three steps Adobe gives you to download?

Please help.

Thank you

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

    Hi Arudi,

It sounds like you have downloaded the installer for Flash but not actually ran the installer to install it (open the dmg file and run the program inside).

Adobe Flash Player updates available for OS X on December 12, 2014 - Apple Support

But details on the dmg files is found here.

Mac OS X: Using Disk Copy disk image files - Apple Support

To use a disk image file, double-click the file's icon. (It has a filename extension of .img, .smi, or .dmg.)

When it is opened, a new icon representing the disk (or folder) from which the disk image file was created appears on your desktop and in the Finder. It may appear as a plain white volume (as mentioned above) or with a custom icon. This icon remains available until you "eject" it or restart the computer. You may eject a disk image by dragging its icon to the Trash.

    Then run the installer inside.

    Best,

    Nubz

If you download Adobe Flash from any source other than Adobe, you run the risk of infecting your Mac with malware; web pages insisting you need something new installed in order to use the web page (and are eager to provide it) are a popular method of getting users to install damaging software.

In addition, once Flash is successfully installed, a Flash Player Preferences panel should be installed in System Preferences. Once you open the Flash Player preference panel, click on the Advanced tab and under Updates, choose "Allow Adobe to install updates" so that except, perhaps, for major updates (Flash just went from version 15 to 16), Flash should update automatically.

Thank you for all the important information that I knew nothing of. I wish there were two green checks because you gave me so much information, you actually deserve one also.

    Glad you found that useful.

Because there must be millions of users with Flash installed, the automatic update process is not immediate when a Flash update is released so that Adobe can avoid overloading its own servers. Indeed, probably for that reason, when a new version is released, a check for available updates using the Flash Preference panel will often say that your installation is current when it's not. A more reliable method of checking is to go to Adobe's web page to compare your installed version to the latest version. If a newer one is available, rather than use Adobe's "three step" webpage, you can get it directly at Adobe's distribution webpage. Note that versions for a variety of operating systems are offered there so be sure to pick the Mac OS X (Intel) DMG installer and then use norm123's instructions once the file is downloaded.
