Re-connecting ipod

Can itunes 'find' your ipod like third party software such as Anapod does. I find it a pain if I've ejected my ipod from Itunes, but leave it connected to my comp to charge, then when I want to reconnect, I have to physically remove/replace my firewire cable to kick the sorry thing back into life.
