This all depends on the type of Mac Pro that you have. Can you give us some more info, like a screenshot of: "apple menu > about this mac"?

Dec 18, 2014 7:30 AM in response to jkhwebby Grant Bennet-Alder,For the late 2013 mentioned in the title, this stamens form the article you cited covers the rules:
Can I connect a DVI display?
Mac Pro supports DVI displays using Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapters. Use a single-link DVI adapter such as the Apple Mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter for DVI displays with a resolution up to 1920x1200. Use a Dual-Link DVI adapter such as the Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI adapter for resolutions up to 2560x1600.
Mac Pro supports a total of two single-link DVI displays. If you connect a third DVI display using a passive adapter or a display via HDMI, it will cause one of the three displays to become inactive
ALL Dual-Link displays (wider than 1920 wide) require an Active Dual-Link adapter, because they do a complex conversion that requires additional power to run the chip inside the adapter.
Several ACTIVE third-party adapters from Mini DisplayPort to Single-Link DVI are available for about US$35, and there is one Mini DisplayPort directly to HDMI (limited to 1920 by 1080p or less).

Dec 18, 2014 9:08 AM in response to Grant Bennet-Alderby jkhweb,Sorry about that. I was trying to post off of a specific article. It's the current cylinder late 2013 Mac Pro. I find this article confusing at the last section where it says it can directly do 2 DVI/HDMI, but then talks about needing active powered ones to go above that. Not sure if I need to buy 2 or 4.
http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202801
So specifically, for 4 1080p monitors, can I get away with 2 non-active and two active, or will it require all 4 to be powered?

Dec 18, 2014 9:53 AM in response to Grant Bennet-Alderby jkhweb,Thanks:
Any experience with the 2013 Mac Pro and the active Mini DP to DVI that don't have separate USB power? Those are the ones I'm seeing in the $35 range. All of the ones with separate USB power, like Apple's, are $75-$100. Anyone know if 2 separate single plug (no-usb power) adapters would for sure work?

Dec 18, 2014 10:08 AM in response to jkhwebby lllaass, active ones without USB power are fine for 1080p or less.
I have used a StarTech one.
