How can an HP Deskjet 5550 printer be made compatible with OS X10.9.5?

I have a fully functional HP Deskjet 5550 printer which is not compatible with the newer Mac OS.

HP does not support this printer beyond OS X 10.6. I am running OS X 10.9.5. Is there any

work-around or third party software/driver that can help?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.2)

You might be able to find a driver here.

Hello Eric,

I see possible support only up to MAC OS X 10.8 on the third party software you suggested.

I am running OS X 10.9.5.

The crux of the problem is that the printer install disc will not open because "Power PC applications are no longer supported".

So, is there any way to run software designed for the old Power PC chip to run with the later chip (I believe Intel).

An alternate potential scenario would be if were possible to scale back to an older Mac OS like 10.6 as the printer is supported up

to that system software.

Both of the third-party drivers Eric linked above are Known to work with Mavericks.

"hpijs" is the one that lists Deskjet 5550 as supported. You need all three downloads on that page.

PS - install CDs are frequently out of date by the time you buy a printer. The procedure in the link from Gary above is the "normal" way to get drivers automatically installed if the printer is still supported by the manufacturer.

rcarme - does the printer driver that you installed per your comment in this thread work with OSX 10.10 as well? And does the printer turn on automatically when you hit print from your Mac? (Mine used to when I first got this printer but no longer does so I have to manually turn on the print button each time.)

Plus this page, where I thin you got your installs, does not say it supports beyond 10.8.

Thanks,

The default location of print system files has changed in Yosemite. There are workarounds, like moving files or creating links in the new locations.

One example is in the last post of this thread:

or this:

Perfect. I clicked on the link from VikingOSX above and installed the driver bundle and then when going to System Preferences>Printers & Scanners and adding the new driver (click the plus button and you do not have to delete the old driver first) you have to use “Select Software” and search for “D5500” and install that driver.

Not only does it print faster and better than the driver I got from the initial post by Eric Root at the beginning of this post (no offense as I believe when this post was first started his solution was the best one), but the printer actually turns on automatically when I hit the print button on my computer which is a real bonus for me not to have to always reach over and turn it on.

I am running Yosemite OSX 10.10.3. Thanks everyone!
