How do I know if Safari needs an update?

When “This version of Safari is no longer supported” alert appears, sites don’t load, Safari crashes,etc.

If you're running OS X 10.6 as your profile indicates, Safari will never be updated. No matter what OS X version you have, never trust a prompt on any website to update Safari or any other software.

So sites like Yahoo that say i need to update i can ignore? I have 10.6.8. I'm not having any problems at all. I was just puzzled by the statement with Yahoo. Thanks.

If you want to stay with 10.6, try Firefox which is still being updated.
