Completer wants to make changes

I registered to Apple discussions specifically to thank you for your suggestion. After someone in my company had downloaded a bunch of fonts for testing and began suffering the same symptoms described in this thread, I landed here and AdwareMedic worked like a charm. Thanks again Thomas 🙂

I have 10.6.8 Mac and it will not let me download the admac and the manuel instructions are way over my head, also tried the remove unwanted adware thing but could not find any of the items regarding completer. app in library etc.

I have not downloaded the completer app it just keeps appearing when I turn on the computer, I eject the installer which appears and cancels the pop up.

Is there a idiots guide how to erase this

After spending an hour last night trying the steps listed on the "how to" page, and almost 2 hours on the phone with Apple phone support, I was at an impasse! Although it was great that phone support people made an exception to deal with this problem, and I was told that many of the calls to support in the last 90 days have been dealing with this, I continued to get the "completer" pop up.

After reading and reading, and researching, I made the leap to Adware Medic... figured after a few hours of reading how great it was, it should be legit... IT IS!!!! Within seconds of running it, only a few lines, but all with Genieo attached to them appeared... They must have been buried pretty deep because, I just about went thru each and every line in the system library! Clicked on the button to make them go away, restarted, and ran it again, this time, came up clean! Emptied the trash, restarted, ran a third time, and I am golden!!!!!

I had it happening the first time during a re-start today, Jan 17 2015, and have not installed anything on my MBProR in months. Apart from saying yes to that pesky Java update that came a few days...wekks ago,

AdWare Medic fixed it, no worries. Tried to donate, but page timed out. Will try again, well done Thomas!

I searched and found an online app that automatically removed the adware, and since have not had the annoying pop up of the "completer"

Spoke with Apple and they sent me to this link..... follow the steps and it should work...cheers

Tried that but got the following message when i got to

~/Library/LaunchAgents/com.genieo.completer.download.plist

The folder “com.genieo.completer.download.plist” can’t be opened because you don’t have permission to see its contents.

so what can I do now.

Thomas you seem to be the only one who has come up with a solution with your adware medic.

Unfortunately my mac is the 10.6.8 and your Medic is unsuitable, if I downloaded this yosemite thing would it work with that, or is the Yosemite as bad as people state, if not is it difficult to download

Yosemite is not bad at all, but I wouldn't jump ahead four major system versions just to be able to use AdwareMedic. You'll be far more likely to open yourself to problems caused by incompatible third-party software, inadequate hardware or other issues. One should never upgrade like this without doing a lot of research, particularly into how the newer system will perform on the hardware in question and whether you will have to spend to upgrade third-party software (or learn to do without some entirely).

If you're having trouble following Apple's instructions, try the Genieo removal instructions in my Adware Removal Guide instead:

It worked for me installing adware remover.

Thanks for the link to the uninstall instructions. Just hit this today and following the manual removal seems to have resolved it. Appreciate the help!

My computer has been running slow for weeks and then today I got the completer message asking for my password. I immediately came to this forum for help and saw Thomas' postings. I tried the AdwareMedic software he suggested and it worked like a charm. Not only did it find Genieo, it found some adware extensions in Safari and Chrome.

My computer is running like new again thanks to AdwareMedic!

Many thanks, I asked for a idiots guide, and you supplied it, took me no more than 10 minutes to work it out, now it seems as if it has left me, can not understand how I could not find it with apples instructions, but appeared straight away from yours.
