Q: Completer wants to make changes

This has solved my problem. I think the issue with a lot of people is that, if one does a search in finder for Geneio it only discovers files in Apps - one has to manually go through each Library folder to delete G and even then it can come back next time you download something from the internet. However, now `i have no problems at all. So many thanks

As the author of AdwareMedic, I can assure you that it should solve the problem, and it absolutely will not install any adware.

I took a chance and can report to the group that AdwareMedic did the trick....So far so good...I will continue to monitor.  Thank you thomas_r.

I had this pop up too for several days now.  Of course I didn't supply my password but on the advice of some of the comments here, I went to "thesafemac.com" and downloaded Adware Medic from the site.  It found the Genieo files that I could not find and it removed them.  Very simple fix.  They also offer the steps to removing the adware manually, but they were over my head.

I tried to find the path you mentioned in Step 2 and I got a message saying, "The folder can't be found." and so I'm hesitant to move forward with the rest of the process.

Well, I thought I had it figured out but these slime balls place numerous genieo files so you really need to download Adwaremedic and use it.  The nag came back and I thought I would trust it and it found 5 other Genieo files in various folders.  I had to reboot and then it searched for the other most prevalent adware that affect Macs.   It is free but I do believe they deserve a donation.

Adware Medic worked for me and yup, I was happy to give them a donation.

I used Adware Medic and it totally fixed the problem(s). Even found a couple things I didn't know about. In addition, my Safari app was taking FOREVER to load for the past month or so. After I ran this Adware Medic app, it opens instantly. So there must have been something in there as well. Thanks for putting this app together.

By the way, the adware was installed when I wanted to download something and it required me to first install an ad supported downloader. Never do that.

Go to MacUpdate.com, download AdWare Medic.  It'll find this AdWare and delete it, then reboot the Mac.  Afterwards, run it again to confirm it's gone.  Worked for me just now.

Thank you thomas_r I have been struggeling with this issue for a few days and getting increasingly annoyed by it.

Had tried a few free virus apps from the app store to no avail.

Had tried manual removal too and tried just removing loads of unwanted junk I had accumulated... nothing had worked.

Then found this thread and went to your site ran Adware Medic and it has solved the problem just like that.

I had to sign up to this forum just to say thank you.

I can't thank you enough and have donated a small (sorry times are hard) token of my appreciation to you and your site.

Anyone in any doubts  (and I can fully understand the doubts... so often on my son's PC the 'cure' is the source of the problem)  have no fear this man's site is for real and so is the software, it does exactly what you want and quickly.

Ok, here is an easy fix for the Completer Problem"

Go to finder, hold down the option key and click on Go at the top of the page.   Cl;ick on "Library".   Scroll down to Application Support.   Find the folder called "Geneio" and send it to the trash.  

You just think you got rid of it.   It will nag you ever 4 hrs or when you boot up.   Genieo places files in many folders and comes at you in different ways and directions.  If you had the Genieo folder, you have the full blown infection.   Download AdwareMedic.  It's free and it will find many files that will be displayed to you prior to deletion.   Then, you will gladly make a donation to get rid of these dirt balls from Cnet or the flash download that infected your Mac.

Yes, I had the same thing recently. What I did was as following:

* Ejected the installer.

* Went to the Applications folder.

* Dragged the installer to an application that I have called "AppCleener"

* Moved the rest of the files to trash, Emptied the trash.

* Restarted the mac.

All set, It is no more annoying me.

That is not sufficient to remove Genieo. In fact, those app "cleaners" and "zappers" are all junk that should not be used. They almost never remove the right stuff - either not enough or too much - except in the case of apps that really don't need any uninstalling at all, and can just be dragged to the trash.

I agree with what you've mentioned about those junk apps. But that was what I did and it seems that it worked for me.
