Q: iPad Air to Apple TV connection drops

Every time I try ti mirror my iPad Air to my Apple TV the connection drops after a few minutes. I reconnect, then it drops after a half minute,s I reconnect, then it drops after a few seconds, then try again and it fails to connect. This seems to happen whether I am streaming video from an iPad App or simply mirroring my iPad. And, if streaming a video, I can continue to watch for at least an hours on the iPad if I don't bother trying to mirror. Any ideas??? I'mont sure if I have Apple TV3 or 2, but I think its' 3.

    Hey there Arthur,

If I understand correctly your iPad is not staying connected to your Apple TV when you are trying to use the Airplay function to stream video to it. I would recommend using these troubleshooting steps from the following article, named:

Resolve issues with AirPlay and AirPlay Mirroring from iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch

If you are experiencing intermittent playback or significant network lag with AirPlay or AirPlay Mirroring, it could be due to a weak Wi-Fi connection, interference, or the distance between the Wi-Fi router and your iOS device, Apple TV or AirPort Express.

    Try these suggestions:

    • Ensure that other devices are not trying to stream to the same Apple TV at the same time.
    • Ensure that your Wi-Fi router is set up with the recommended settings for the best performance.
    • Certain external devices, such as microwave ovens and baby monitors, may interfere with a Wi-Fi network. Try moving or disabling these devices.
    • If possible, try to locate your Wi-Fi router in the same room as your iOS device and Apple TV.
    • If your wireless and wired networks are the same, try connecting your Apple TV to the router via Ethernet instead of Wi-Fi.
    • If the Wi-Fi router has an external antenna, check to see that is it connected properly and in good condition.
    • Use the Wi-Fi network troubleshooting guide to resolve interference and other issues.

Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

    All the very best,

    Sterling

I have done some thorough testing. Then I set up a 5Ghz network and connected my iPadAir and my Apple Tv and my iMac to it. Connection troubles went away. But, after doing some more reading, I see recommendations elsewhere NOT to set up a 5Ghz network and to allow the router to switch when need be. So I have turned off the 5Ghz network. I have not tested AirPlay Mirroring after my changed back. I have one App to access HD movies that needs AirPlay mirroring, or I wouldn't bother.

Using the AirPort Utility, I see connection speeds: iMac 300 Mbs;  iPadAir 300 Mbs; Apple TV 150 Mbs. My AirPort Extreme is 4th generation. I think my Apple TV is 3rd Generation. Not sure how to tell.

I'd appreciate any suggestions for the best way to get the highest speed.

I solved this problem by not allowing the iPad to go to the lock screen.

Thanks. that certainly is a solution that I found early on, but still... the connection fails actually the video stops and I have to hit pause on the iPad, then play. It plays for a few minutes, then stops again. I hit pause again, then play and it resumes for an even shorter time. Until it just plan won't start.
