I'm guessing that you have a SIM card installed? See this support document. If you see 'No SIM' alert on iPhone - Apple Support

haven't quite the hang of this system & iphone yet but the problem has gone away after pwr cycle. Problem solved for now , 2nd time in two days so may have a bad SIM too.

That is a good possibility. You can always check with your carrier and see about a replacement. Glad you got it working.
